Greater Germanic Reich

Might not be the most tasteful choice of words.

[up] How so? I'm not fazed by its nazi associations. It's a beautiful word.

Reichs just means Empire. Or the original Reich, means the Holy Roman Empire. I should hope people are educated enough to know that rather than "HURRRR NAZIS!" It'd be like saying "etat" is a horrible word if it were associated with some group, when it is the basic french word for state.

But you know while we're on this topic of big countries, I'm all for Greater Tibet. Or perhaps, the Tibetan Empire! It's only been 700 years since they were last around.

Exactly, Reich was in use long before Nazism.

Wow, the Tibetan Empire looks quite impressive. But then it conflicts with a massive Chinese Empire.

I'm in favour of Greater India too. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.

And while we're at it, bring back the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Principality of Antioch, under Frankish rule.

^^ and ^^^

Ultimately, any nation that uses "Reich" as a title is going to invite comparisons to the Nazis whether those comparisons are justified or not. If that word was appropriate, the Germans probably would've used it post-WWII or during the 1989 unification. As things currently are, it's still too heavily linked to Nazi Imperialism.

For comparison's sake, you would not use the swastika anywhere, ever, for any reason. Pre-WWII, the swastika was a symbol of luck and good will. Funny how things change.

Events as horrible as the Holocaust can alter the implications of a term forever. For instance, you still shouldn't refer to a German as a "kraut", unless you're also German or of relatively recent German or German-Austrian descent.

This coming from a person who thinks German is a marvelous language, is very interested in the history of central Europe and is one generation removed from being Austrian. This doesn't exactly canonise my opinion, but I've got a bit of a reason to care, no?

I don't care what oversensitive associations people make. Reich is an awesome word, and if it is descriptive for a union of Austria and Germany, then that is exactly what should be used.

Okay, for logical consistency... do you associate the same stigma with the USSR and the Hammer and Sickle?

Many people do. Not to mention the color Red, the word communist, and a host of other things.

"Reich is an awesome word, and if it is descriptive for a union of Austria and Germany, then that is exactly what should be used."

The Swastika is a very pretty symbol, but I'm pretty sure no one is in a rush to get it tattooed onto their bodies in celebration of its beauty.

And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?

What they said.

Seriously, I agree. "Reich" is a beautiful word and, if not for the whole Nazi thing, could contribute to the Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming that would be greater social unity and trust between Germany and Austria.

But there is that Nazi thing to take into account, more's the pity.

People use the word reich all the time in Germany, it's part of basic vocabulary. It's hard to talk about German history without using the word when a vast majority of its time it was the Reich and you've things like Reichscritter or Reichstag and so on.

Tibetan Empire's height is probably when it razed Tang Dynasty's capital to the ground.

Or you know, maybe we could go with the Mongol Empire, that'd united all of Asia (except Japan and korea) and through much the central asian republics and then pieces of the mideast.

"Reich" as a proper noun is different to "reich" as a noun. It'd be the Fourth Reich, and that would just leave a bad taste.

Indeed. It's German, damnit, not Germanic!

Really, Reich just means Empire, or even just realm. Of course, using it as a loan word in English for no good reason at all is kinda... dubious.

On that note, a state that should totally still exist: The Holy Roman Empire of German Nation waii

Especially if a figurehead Hasburg Monarchy can be set up.

Bring it, England. Mainland European monarchies were always cooler than yours.

Three pages in and only three mentions of Palestine? Wow.

For the record, Palestine. If there's one country that deserves to exist, it's probably this one.

Last I checked, Palestine existed. Unless something went horribly wrong and I missed it.

If you're saying that Palestine should get its lands back from the post WWII border shuffle, then I could get behind that.

Yeah, but they deliberately cut it. Cut all their ancestry. Which means, they have no ancestry, and are artificial upstarts from the 20th century. Boringtongue
