With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.
First, a few starter questions.
- How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
- Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
- Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
- Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
- Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?
Also, a personal question from me.
- Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

I usually make a point of saying US Citizens when speaking about US citizens, and I refer to the United States in plural. However, if one refers to the US as America and its citizens as Americans, I won't try to correct them so long as they don't try to correct me. This can be tedious, because they sometimes then demand that either one name Eurafrasia that or admit to hypocrisy.

There's also the mistaken belief that the economy is a zero-sum game. Or in this case, if "those blacks" want more jobs, resources, or opportunities, those have to be taken away from someone else. Since poor people in general are already lacking in those, they can easily get led to believe that their jobs and money are what's next on the chopping block for the sake of someone else. (And rarely, this is exactly what happens, which doesn't help matters.)
This is the origin of the "they took our jobs" meme that gets quoted a lot.

There is also a deliberate element of divide-and-conquer perpetrated by the ruling classes, scapegoating other disadvantaged people so the structure that they, the country's rulers, are responsible for is not brought into question. See also, 'they took your jobs/they drive down your wages' anti-immigrant sentiment being whipped up as the same party severely curtails workers' rights.
What's precedent ever done for us?
People also seem to need someone to look down upon to feel better about themselves. As in: "I may not be rich, but at least I'm not one of 'those' people".

I do not think they did it on purpose. It was just a nice added bonus they got when they had to find someone to whip someone else into gathering their cotton or whatever.
Generally, the ruling elite is wary of anyone who does not dress and smell like them, without any regard for strategy.
Mind you: I am tlaking about older times. Modern times? Yeah. Denying people education is pretty much key strategy for certain sectors
