The Heathen.

Puns aside, who cares? It's not exactly something you trace to modern police officers since we've had things like guards and patrols since before medieval times.

I just hate how these sorts of arguments turn into..

"We don't respect cops because they don't respect us!"

"Cops don't respect you because you don't respect them!"

Really, they're in a position of authority. If they want to make cops more respected, they should act in a non-tyrannical, immoral manner. Cops have earned their bad reputation by not being moral. Oh course, it doesn't help that we have a bunch of stupid laws. But it doesn't all fall on the fact of having bad laws.

Great, then it's a matter of fixing those laws. Maybe revising police training to include more attention on controlling your temper, even though the vast majority of police already have a level of control that far out does the average person, and you know, people not being dicks back to them. You can complain about the police department containing a few police who aren't the nicest people ever but that doesn't change the fact that the criminals they deal with on a daily basis are usually much worse.

The younger guys care, but after fifteen years on the force, dealing with every punk who feels the need to rebel against the nearest authority figure gets old.

I don't believe police officers need to start respecting people more in order to get respect themselves.

One normal person losing his temper at a police officer is just a jerk. A police officer losing his temper at a normal person is POLICE OPPRESSION and everyone comes down on them like a ton of bricks. You can't really compare the two because a police officer's actions are under a lot stricter watch than other people.

It seems to be a natural outgrowth of "Private things have less scrutiny, government things are more scrutinized" that causes such bad PR for government services.

[up][up] And there's a good reason for that. Police are in a position of power.

^^^I do respect police officers even though I haven't seen them much since I tend to not move much in city or with group of people who tend to get in trouble a lot =P But I wouldn't respect the obnoxious ones.
