This news was already posted in the MGS Survive thread, but I guess it warrants being on the general MGS thread too.

Some folks are pointing out that the same list of MIA and KIA mercs has appeared in that order in Phantom Pain. Not sure if they're correct though: I can't seem to find any images or tapes correlating that info.

How do you zoom with the sniper rifle in Ground Zeroes? It shouldn't have to be a big deal but it seems like I cannot zoom with the the weapon on hand?

Could've sworn either R3 zoomed in (assuming you're using the PS 4 controller), and that the D-pad allowed you to control the Zoom distance manually. Keep in mind, it's been awhile since I've played MGSV, so I could be wrong.

Hey, what would have happened had Big Boss and Venom worked together? Like a big co-op campaign with the two most legendary soldiers of the 20th century?

How screwed would Cipher and Skull Face be?

...pretty much Metal Gear 1 and 2 where the rest of the world was screwed? They were working together about as much as they reasonably could. Big Boss had to slowly reamass his power, and Venom took his place and became a wanted man. Couldn't be sene together but I assumed their operations and Metal Gear plans were mostly in sync.

...There is a really, really long fanfic in my head that ends in a Face-Off style scenario, with Venom fighting back to reclaim Diamond Dogs from Naked Snake shortly after the end of Act I.

Basically, the idea was to repeat the sense of loss, only this time with Big Boss coming out of hiding once Skull Face is dead and demanding you to hand over all of your troops and resources to act as his new Outer Heaven army. Miller would initially go along, excited that his "real" friend is back, but gradually wean off his honeymoon phase and realize how much effort he and Venom put into building Diamond Dogs, along with the fact that he himself had been played by his supposed best friend, who did squat in it's construction and thought of them as nothing more than decoys. Venom would start off naked, ala MGS 1 in the middle of Afghanistan after being taken captive, and would need to link up with Quiet, who also went into hiding. She'd help you out through a few more missions, only for the events of a Quiet Exit to play out as they did - only this time, with her staying behind in a suicide mission to help a heavily wounded Venom escape the Diamond Dogs assigned to capture or kill them.

The Final Boss fight would have you duking it out against Big Boss on top of the Research Platform, with the A.I. Core making random comments from The Boss; you'd be stuck on opposing ends of the platform. Think of the gunfight between Ocelot and Naked Snake from MGS 3 to see what I'm getting at. Halfway through the fight, Big Boss gets short-tempered and decides to basically cheat and have his men shoot you... only, the problem is these are all of the guys you happened to recruit throughout the game, not him, so they hesitate and eventually openly declare to stay out of it.

Naturally, you being the protagonist, you'll win. But you spare B.B, on the condition you two never cross paths again. He agrees, since he's essentially at gunpoint and has yet to acquire any other means of threatening you, and had also royally pissed off Miller along with the majority of the Diamond Dogs for drastically changing things into the more paranoid culture Miller had instated from the original Act II.

Fast forward into the events of the original Metal Gear. During the years inbetween, you've more or less been still openly acting as Big Boss, but moved into the background and instead leaned upon the reputation of the company instead of the myth to continue recruiting. This leads to some outsiders thinking Big Boss quit. Diamond Dogs mostly continued business as is, performing security duties, armed assistance, wetwork, etc as they have in the past. Only, their clientele started to dry up at the end of the Cold War, and they could only find low-pay conflicts in Africa and South America to keep themselves afloat anymore (this would be why Outer Heaven doesn't seem to be as well equipped, or why their Metal Gear sucked).

Then one day world opinion turns against you when a smear campaign comes out, painting you as some sort of war criminal, yet oddly leaving out the fact that none other than Big Boss was in charge of the Diamond Dogs - turned Outer Heaven merely several years prior. The events go exactly same, only this time, the Truth Tape at the end has the real Big Boss revealing to Venom that he wants him dead in order to sell the world on the idea that Big Boss is finally gone, thus allowing him to maneuver freely in the dark against the Patriots again. More or less the same as things ended, but with more of a sense of malice out of B.B this time.

EDIT: I know, it's a weird response to what the previous Troper's question was. Just had to get that idea outta my head. Oh yeah, and the whole "Kingdom of the Flies" thing would play out slightly different; young Liquid/Eli thinks you're nothing but an unworthy imposter, meant to be surpassed and beaten after learning the truth about your identity. But sadly, this would only happen after the real Big Boss appeared and openly claimed to him that he didn't care one bit about him or his struggles prior, AND after you were able to briefly bond with the kid. Would really help sell the idea on Big Boss coming back from the coma as a massive jerk, and more closely fit what he became by the events of MG 2.

It is strange to think that of that original generation of stealth game protagonists only Fisher is left now. But it was a nice touch by Ubisoft to pay their respects in that way.

Garrett and Agent 47 both predate Sam Fisher, and have had games come out since Blacklist. So there's actually three left.

Hmm, yeah I forgot about those two. I imagine Garett probably would prefer people forget about the last Thief game but he can always bounce back.

[up]Maybe, maybe not. They keep hinting that Splinter Cell will get a new game and the fact that they brought back Ironside shows they have learned something from Blacklist, we still have Hitman proving that the genre has legs, Aragami and Shadow Tactics are both relatively recent original games in the genre (albeit different takes on it), and there are some decent stealth mechanics in different genres that should keep the genre going, even if it has lost the biggest franchises that made it great back in the day.

And now I'm wondering if someone has done fanart of Snake, Gabe and Sam in a bar having a drink together.

When we first see him in Solid 4, how were we supposed to know that "Akiba" is the same Johnny from Solid and Solid 2? I mean, he was just a guy Snake thought was his enemy before Meryl appears. You only know it's Johnny if you press L1.

It's been so long since I've played MGS 4... can't say I remember when Akiba was first properly introduced via name.

Ironside recently said in an interview the real reason he wasn't in Blacklist was because he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and wasn't expected to live.

Garrett and Agent 47 both predate Sam Fisher, and have had games come out since Blacklist. So there's actually three left.

The clip show above is from Ghost Recon Wildlands, a game that came out last year.

The last Thief game to come out was in 2014 and was a critical failure. Not to mention the "Garret" of that game wasn't the original one.

The last Hitman was more recent (2016) but I've barely heard about it since it released, so I'd imagine the series isn't as popular as it once was.

I'd say Fisher and 47 are the only ones who are still relevant.

Yeah, but Ghost Recon is not Splinter Cell. This isn't Fisher's game.

And your point against Thief is confusing. First off, it doesn't matter if the game is a failure, it still exists. And him not being "the same Garrett" is like claiming that Ratchet & Clank 2016 doesn't count as starring Ratchet because it's a pseudo-reboot. Or that Link doesn't count as a long-running character because each one makes like, two appearances tops.

In this case it's literally not Garret. It's a descendant. Since you can find Garret's mechanical eye.

If it wasn't a failure then I would count "Garrett" with 47 and Fisher who've had recent games that were well-received. As such, I wouldn't count Thief 2014 as making the franchise relevant if we're discussing "which stealth icons are still around?"

As said, 2014 Garrett literally isn't the same Garret from the original Thief franchise. He just has the same name. I never finished it but I never heard of it being a "Link situation" where he's the great-great-maybe-descendant of the original Garret.

So, in terms of "OG's from the stealth genre being around" - I wouldn't count Thief.

The game still crashed and burned and by all measures took any hope of the franchise returning with it so regardless it's not exactly carrying the torch for the stealth genre at this point.
