Don't censor, instead appropriate

If I were a protestor against some police state government, the only thing worse than having your Icon Of Rebellion censored and denounced is having it be hi-jacked and praised.

Do you think this would work to reduce morale and inspire disgust in the protestors?

To see their symbol to be mass marketed for a purpose opposite of what it was intended for.

However it is not only symbols. Revolutionary figureheads will be invited to the capital city to be given medals at highly publicized events for serving their government and having performed various good deeds opposite of what they have done.
