It is indeed quite wretched. Those highly detailed, realistic sprites don't really work for a top-down console style game.
I did a forum title search and couldn't find this page. I have no idea why.
Back on topic, I think RPG Maker is great. I bought one of the newer versions on a Steam sale, and mostly I mess around with character and item creation. I think I'd be terrible at events/scripting.
That said I do have a project I'd like to work on with it (though I doubt it'd go well). A fairly simple RPG filled with Mind Screw.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I'm currently trying to see if I can make an adventure game thingy with it. Might make it point & click even, but I'll see about that one.
Also, about the High Fantasy pack, they're meant to be used with an isometric script, which probably is non-existent anyway.
Regardless, though, they're still butt ugly.
Anyway, if anyone wants, I could post the Free Movement script. It's in released state at the moment, but it's very buggy.
It's free to use for non-commercial as well as commercial games, by the way.

Signatures are for lamers.I recently bought VX Ace, and I'm definitely enjoying it thus far - the last RPG Maker game I owned was for the PS 2, and I'm so glad to be using it on a computer.
Atm, I'm using it to put together an idea that, if I complete it and it turns out to work as much as I hope, I might bring to some programmer friends.
So far, I've gotten into a bit of frustration with tilesets and another with boat events, but everything's going swimmingly - I predict dealing with stat / level progression and difficulty is going to be a issue, but the program is awesome and makes these things easy to experiment with.

So, what happens is that I have a very ambitious project in mind that involves gameplay based on Pokemon. As you know, the GUI-based editing of the game is... limited. No real way to mess with equipment slots, stat growths, and visuals of the battle system - they all have to be done via scripting.
Trouble is, it's advanced scripting, and I haven't been able to find anything in regards to that matter. Can anyone assist? Even a basic tutorial on how to use scripts to alter the fundamentals of the game would be a big help.
I saw the High Fantasy addon pack. Holy balls that's hideous. Who would pay $30 for that?
