I just got RPG Maker XP, and I plan on making a sequel to Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross with it.

Anyone else got any ambitious projects in RPG Maker?

I've used the free trials of XP and VX. I plan to buy VX eventually, but it's kinda low on my priority list. I'm learning Python right now, so if I ever learn Ruby I'd probably ask for help on sprites, music, and writing here and attempt to make one of my several ideas for games.

I don't really have the patience to finish an entire game on my own.

On the other hand, I find RPG Maker a great tool for demoing game concepts, especially since you can break the system with some creativity.

I'm working on something right. It's not exactly ambitious. Mostly because I haven't really written anything to that scale before.

Also map design's a bitch. I'm not sure how to go about making a good map.

I just think about the focal points and objectives, designing the rest of the map around that.

Or just roll with it and fix it later as needed. Anyway, I tried XP but I'm not willing to cough up the money for a full copy. Besides, if I want to do one off little projects, I use Game Maker (though that's probably because I'm a programmer). That being said, I can sprite if anyone ever needs a spriter for a project they're doing.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Well it's not exactly ambitious but it would be cool to complete it. It's not really that difficult if you have the patience and know how to make the gameplay fun though. The only thing I have problems with is scripting. I'll be able to complete my first project if only I have a good counter attack script dammit.

[up]Wait did someone just say spriting? I myself can draw facesets and Battlers and I use this website for my sprites. But it's still so limited on variety. Like you can't have a Badass Longhair male unless they have a ponytail.

Hey guys, I have kind of a problem here.

Every time I try to register my copy of RPG Maker XP, I get stuck at the screen where it says "connecting to the activation server." I'm using windows XP, so I thought I wouldn't have a problem?

I emailed Enterbrain about this, and I did everything they recommended

  • Installing .NET framework updates
  • Disabling the firewall
  • Reinstalling RPG Maker XP

Nothing has worked.

Is there anything else I can do?

I've got XP, and it's been a while since I've worked on my game (called 1337game: The Legend), which is, of course, a parody-type game about a noob rising through the ranks of Gameserver Island all the way through "Admin," which is basically a master of "hax."

I doubt I'll ever finish it, but the funny thing is I already planned out the entire story.

I owned the original RPG Maker for the Playstation One. My favorite gaming magazine at the time gave it a 2 out of 10 for its anemic NES-era game engine.

I finally activated RPG Maker XP, and I'm currently working on a Chrono Trigger fangame.

However, I'm having a problem estimating the dimensions that the world map should be.

Sometimes it helps to see what the size of the map is in other games. Mines 235X235 and that's more than enough. Granted my game is only taking place on an island nation.

Wait... how do you create a world map in XP? All I see are regular-map tilesets, but nothing that can be used for a world map. Come to think of it, I don't even know how to present a world map screen either. Did you make these yourself or something?

Well, I'm using tilesets that were custom-ripped from a Chrono Trigger ROM, so it might be different.

Well it's worth a try. Just make a couple of continents and see how much space they take.

RPG Maker II, Quest 64 done in Dragon Quest style. Of course, we're still going to make the game similar, like killing most of the monetary system, fixing the spells, and so on.

Too bad there's no faqs on how the spells work. If only I could find the Guide...

Only make any maps as large as you can decorate them so that they don't look boring.

What's the difference between RPG Maker XP and VX? They look mostly the same, but VX is twice as expensive.

I used to muck around with RPG Maker 2000 back in the day, before it was officially translated into english. I never released anything though, other than a kind of tech demo for a Zelda type game.

Cool, that worked. Danke.

Also, while I'm here - I think we can all agree that everyones first project in RPG Maker was pretty much this.

Depends the game. tongue The one we're working on has actual good dialogue, and not engrish or badly written crap.

Well, okay, Engrish can actually be entertaining, but horrible typos are not. But we don't need to go into the crap of non-company made video games. It exists.

Alright, I'm having some trouble with battle music.

One boss theme I want to use has an intro segment and a looping segment, and I need to know how to play the intro segment once hen the battle begins and then play the loop for the rest of the battle.

I can't remember much about XP or XV but shouldn't you be able to start a parallel event that either keeps a timer or checks when the song is finished playing and then play the main loop?

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.
