True. Or at least maybe something a little stronger then the boomerang.

Either way, as I said what i said, the Beta is now forever over.

Game comes out tonight / tomorrow on PSN, 360 (and maybe PC) all for the price of 15 dollars.

I gotta say, a TF 2 styled game for 15 dollars. Decent deal right? I think I'll probably wait for a sale or something, at least for now.

So is this any good? And how connected is this with the Batman mythos? Like, are the maps based on certain locations in Gotham City, are the special weapons based on Batman's gadgets, etc?

It's not connected. The opening video explains it quite easily.

When Batman soars away, the impostors come to play. That's all the story. There's no real connection to the series honestly, location or otherwise. At least, I don't think so...

Every weapon is "jury rigged" and low tech versions of weapons. Heck, the rocket launcher shoots explosives soda bottles. And there are a few interesting weapons as well, like a knockoff of Mr. Freeze's freeze gun. Goes through armor and chargable. Also other more "unique" stuff like a bomb launcher and a bow + arrow, aside from the Standard FPS Guns.

They have 2 real equipment slots, for different stuff. I can't remember all of it, but there's some traits and gadgets. Some are things like pipebombs, enemy goggles, spring shoes, gliders, a boomerang and a grappling gun. You can mix and match all of these, complete with body frames which determine things like speed, melee, and HP. Unlike TF 2, there is no such thing as "Classes". You pick your two weapons, traits, gear, body size, etc and customize it.

the PSN/360 trials are free to download, though I think things reset after 60 minutes / quit game. You can buy the full version for 15 dollars. Give it a shot and see what you think.

EDIT: Ninja'd right out of the water, but...

[up][up] & [up]: Some of the maps are based on "famous" spots in Gotham, like Crime Alley and Amusement Mile. Also, while there aren't "classes" as such, you have to level to unlock the various parts of what you can use for your custom loadouts; until you get to a point where you have loadouts you like, there are five preset ones that sort of act as different classes.

So, I watched a few gameplay videos, and I'm planning on getting it, I just have to decide between PSN and Steam. So, I had a few ideas on what a sequel (or actually, a remake would work just as well) could include in terms of story, maps, and weapons. Here's my ideas for the story:

Batman has been missing for almost a month, supposedly on an interdimensional mission with the Justice League. The Joker and Harley Quinn are currently being held in Arkham Asylum. Other crime in the city is being handled by Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl, but soon, two new groups come into play. One aims to exact justice on the criminal underworld, but with the lethal ability that Batman rejects. Another aims to cause chaos in the streets, exploiting the absence of Gotham City's greatest protector. In story mode, you can choose between the stories of the Bats and the Jokers.

The Jokers are a group made up of former henchman and new wannabe-murderers. With Batman gone, they have decided to take Gotham for themselves, choosing the impersonate the gang of the Joker. The first few missions have the Jokers spread chaos, not really having a real goal. They fight the GCPD on a couple occasions, and have a raid on one of Mr. Freeze's hideouts, ending with a boss-fight against Mr. Freeze. But then they are attacked by a new group of deadly vigilantes: the Bats. The Jokers have no real structure and are unprepared to face an organized unit like these, so the ineffective leader of the Jokers makes a real plan: Attack Arkham Asylum in an attempt to free the Joker and Harley Quinn to have them lead the group. The Joker admits that when he first heard of these impostors, he was planning to hunt down each of them and kill them for sullying his name, but he has become impressed with them for their rescue, and takes control of the group. The rest of the story has the Jokers fighting the Bats with Joker as their Mission Control.

The Bats' story begins with a voice-over of a man explaining how Batman is gone, and how Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl can't handle what's about to come. He says that to really control crime, there has to be no mercy and no compassion. Criminals should be left dead. It's revealed that this man is the Red Hood, or Jason Todd, at one point the second Robin and recently a deadly vigilante. He has put together a group of citizens who agree with his creed, and has them impersonate a squad of Batmen to protect Gotham. They do things such as battle Bane and his thugs (with a Bane boss-fight), and come to blows with Nightwing. The battle against Nightwing has the player character manning a turret in one of the Bats' cars, shooting at the Batmobile driven by Nightwing, and then fighting him hand-to-hand until Red Hood can arrive to fight him himself. Soon, their attention turns to the Jokers, and the rest of the campaign features the two groups fighting to a standstill.

At the last mission of both stories, a big battle happens where the two groups fight while Red Hood battles Joker and Harley. At a certain point, no matter what side you are on, your character is blinded in a flash of light and everything moves in slow motion. As you turn around, someone's foot hits you square in the face and you fall to the ground. Your character watches as Batman and his allies (Robin, Nightwin, and Batgirl) tear across the area, taking down both the Bats and the Jokers. Batman swoops in and takes out Red Hood and Joker, as well as Harley. He tells Joker that no matter how many times the Joker tries, and even if it seems like he's gone, he will always come back to stop him. Then he tells Red Hood that killing is not the right way to enforce justice, and that he should be ashamed of himself for leading the people of Gotham into becoming murderers. The members of the two groups are taken away, some to Arkham Asylum and some to Blackgate Penitentiary. Batman retakes the streets of Gotham, and everything returns to normal.

Seems that Gotham City Impostors has been released on Steam... as a free-to-play game.

I just downloaded it because it's free to play. The first two game I played ended with the server disconnecting, but all the games after that have worked fine. It's really, really good. I'm happy that anything that can be bought with real money can also be unlocked through gameplay, so you don't have to pay to get an item if you don't want to. The customization is pretty deep and the controls feel responsive. It also has lots of color, which is pretty rare for shooters these days. It's really worth a shot, especially since it's free.

So now that it's free to play what happens to all the people who originally paid for it? Do they at least get free stuff?

I would have considered playing it on Steam, but given what I had heard that the PC version felt like a bad port, and given my experience with the really bad matchmaking systems, I doubt I'll pick this up again.

Holy Grail, huh? Cool story, bro.

[up][up] About it being a bad port, yes and no. On the good side, it gives you a decent amount of graphical options, the controls feel very responsive, and the performance is really good (I didn't do a fraps test, but I'd guess it's a full 60 fps maxed out). Another bonus is that this new free to play version uses Steamworks as opposed to Games for Windows Live. Unfortunately there's still lots of technical problems. After playing for several hours, I found that the game frequently freezes on menu screens, which is really bad, but I've never had it crash during actual gameplay. Another pretty serious problem is that if you try to mute someone while you're in the lobby, it mutes a completely different person from the one you have selected. If you go to mute during the actual gameplay, it's fine, but that's still a pretty pathetic glitch. As far as matchmaking goes, it's okay, but not great. I've heard horror stories about waiting half an hour to get in a match when it first game out, but most of the time I haven't had to wait more than a minute or two. However, the matchmaking does occasionally go crazy and fail completely, making you have to back out and go back in. Overall, once you actually get into a game, you're home free, but getting into one can be a bit irksome for the reasons I just listed. With that said though, I did find it fun enough to play for several hours and was willing to put up with the ridiculous glitches because I liked the gameplay so much, so you might want to play a few more rounds before writing it off completely.

[up][up][up][up]Steam users do in fact get free stuff: a Platinum Pack DLC that provides a large XP boost, costume coin boost, and a bunch of weapons, gadgets, and costumes, as well as all body types unlocked. I think there's more to it than that though.

Never been a fan of games where you have to play your own crappy self insert instead of a 'real deal' character, so I'll pass.

So, after playing a day Gotham City Impostors, i found enjoyable moments on there:

First, the key unlocking. You level up, you get a key to unlock weapon, weapon mod, body type ect. It's really nice, since there's no level requirement for each thing. I also find it really good that you can kill everything with any weapon, if it would be king maker against tough one, you could still beat him.

All that it would need is more players. The game's something you should really try out.

I still play this game occasionally on PC. It, alongside Blacklight Retribution, are some of the only COD-ish FPS's I play nowadays.
