I don't think abolishing prisons is a good idea, there are people whho actually commit crimes that need to be isolated form society. But I do recognize that overcrowded prisons do cause problems. My approach to crime is, that the goal is to reduce crime, and less about punishment. Short sentences and humane prisons help criminal rehabilitate, while harsh penalties and bare prisons make inmates restless and bitter.
