The goal of a profit organization (aka a corporation) is to make a profit. That's the definition. How they make that profit varies, but they all intend to make a profit.

The goal of a non-profit organization depends on what the founder wanted the goal to be. Many such goals require money to implement, so they might make a profit anyway, they would simply save that profit instead of paying it out to investors. A non-profit organization very well might require full-time employees, which it would need money to pay.

Do you think that the legal rights and responsibilities should vary between profit and non-profit organizations? In any case, what do you think those rights and responsibilities should be?

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

Sure that's always been in the case.

Typically the split has been that profit based organisations are expected to be beholden to its shareholders. For privately held companies, it is whatever the owner feels like.

For non-profit organisations, they may or may not get a tax break depending on the industry they are involved in. They work on donations rather than investment.

I guess the only difference is the initial contracts and setups of the organizations.

A guy called dvorak is tired. Tired of humanity not wanting to change to improve itself. Quite the sad tale.
