Bah, it's stories like this that make me hate the news. With the underlying assumption that they couldn't talk to the kid with anger issues and get him to calm down, the other results would most likely be:

  • Use a taser - more effective weapon, seen as "more cruel"
  • Fight it out of the boy's hands - adult man grabbing a minor, most likely including harming him, brings more controversy
  • Do nothing - negative backlash of police being inefficient, incompetent, et cetera. Police especially dislike this generalization, because most are both very qualified and not corrupt, but pop culture and media likes to portray them like this. If they do nothing and the kid actually hurts himself or others, the shitstorm would be much greater.

I know this argument has been done to death, but I'm another supporter of the actions taken by the police. As a camp counselor for 6 year olds, I know that there's no real easy way to stop them, as their less-developed minds cause them to act more rashly with less care for the law, along with being more prone to fighting dirty and aiming for the eyes or groin. It's sad for an uncontrollable kid to be temporarily blinded by pepper spray, but it's worse for an innocent cop to be taken out of duty permanently due to damages taken when they get too close while trying to disarm and the kid fights back.

Plus the kid was seen to be fine in the video, I don't think there was much long-term damage to the kid, and no one else was hurt. Call me crazy, but I'm voting for the police force being competent on this.
