I'm wondering what breakout pistol my main character should use. No Glocks or Berettas, they've been done before a lot. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I could go for whatever fits, but I'm specific I guess

Two points to consider:

  • It shouldn't be a big deal. If they have a pistol, further detail is only for authenticity's sake. Focus on why they have the pistol in the first place. That's much more interesting than the model of firearm.
  • You know the character better than we do.

If you draw attention to a specific weapon, don't overthink it or spend much time writing on it unless it's important to the plot or character development. I've got a swordsman character whose sword has been cursed and cannot be drawn from its scabbard, for instance. So how does a swordsman get by without using his weapon? How does he break the curse? What's the cost? There's a reason to draw attention to that kind of thing. There's plot in there.

But if you can't make the weapon a relevant, important part of a character, then you should question why they have it and why you want to use it in the first place. I see a lot of that kind of stuff on this forum; explanations of systems and weapons and character appearances that have small bearing on what underlies the actual character development and narrative.

In short, forget the gun until you know what you want to do with the character. And if you know, then you don't need us to answer your query.
