Keep?: Troper Tales.Funny Moments

This page could be a great dumping grounds for all those personal anecdotes in the main article about viewing TV or movie moments. Instead, it lists funny moments from people's personal lives.

That has nothing in the slightest to do with this site. There are many better places on the internet to submit your funny anecdotes. And the page has gotten so long that we made a second page for it, and yet the original is still on the big page lock list.

The problem extends from having a page that's not about a trope. People can talk about their personal experiences that connect with a particular trope - that's what the troper tales pages are for of course. If you post a story on the troper tales page for First Girl Wins about how you met your husband, well, your candor may raise some eyebrows, but it helps provide an example of the trope at hand. To quote the main the Troper Tales page, "Got a story about how life came to imitate art? Share it here!"

But when we have a page so directionless and broad as Funny Moments, the troper tales page becomes a meaningless mess. They aren't, at all, examples of life imitating art. Examples from tropers' lives do not expand our knowledge of "funny moments" in any way.

Yet we could forgive all that with no trouble if the entries were even vaguely funny. They aren't. The page even has a disclaimer on the top saying that those involved in the tale found the incidents funny but that you probably will not. What use then is the page?

Here, with no editing, are just the latest entries:

• The D&D campaign my friends and I just started had quite a few examples, from threatening to set the king's messenger on fire(repeatedly) to inventing the Aerial Strip club, but by far the crowning moment was this:

—>Wizard(Me): That's quite a shiny crown.(To Rouge)Ten gold pieces says you can't steal it. —>Rouge: You're on. I can do that. —>King(DM): I can hear you plotting to steal my crown, you know. —>Wizard: (Bluff check)No, you can't... —>DM: You can't do that... —>Wizard: These aren't the droids you're looking for.

• This trooper was watching our cat, hoping that she would go into the garage just before we would close it as we were leaving to do something in town, but of course as we were closing it, we urged her to go inside, but of course, she goes the other way, which actually prompted me to more or less yell out "You're going the wrong way!"
• This troper got a stuffed rabbit from Build A Bear the other day. After spending a long time trying to come up with a name, my sister suggested "knee slapper" (and then whacked me in the knee with it). She then suggested "Pacific Ocean". This quickly evolved into "Sir Knee Slapper of the Pacific Ocean", which was shortened into SKNSPO (pronounced "Sneeze Poe"). She then started dancing around my room singing "SKNSPO! He danced without shame! SKNSPO! He has a funny name!SKNSPO! He does a bunny dance! SKNSPO! This rabbit has no paaaaaaaaaaaants!" I am scarred for life.
• This Troper lives a life of these. XD First one comes from last year at Solo and Ensemble. This troper's friends were sent to get the bus so that we could go get dinner at Mc Donalds. The two managed to hitch a ride back up to the school on the bus without having to walk all the way back. However, once they got off of the bus to go get our teacher, the bus was pulling away to go back to the bus lot... which was not what we wanted. This troper asked her friend why the bus was pulling away and the friend literally swirled around and began screaming "HEY! WAIT! COME BACK!!!" She even ran after—- not jogged, full out RAN—- after the bus in her high-heeled boots. This troper and her other friend were dying because their friend is a short black girl and just seeing her run after a bus in high heels killed us.
  • Then there was another one that still sticks with this troper. She wore a t-shirt that said "Smart Cookie" on it to school. This troper has a friend who's a foreign exchange student from China and she's just so darned cute. She saw my shirt and she said "Oh, then if you're a smart cookie, I'm a... stupid cake." This troper almost fell to the floor laughing. You just had to be there and hear the way she said it.
• One day, this troper was playing a Mad Libs game with her best friend. Because we have very dirty minds, the story came out like this:

—>Once upon a crap, there were three little pigs. The first pig was very screwy, and he built a house for himself out of shits. The second little pig was poopy, and he built a house out of fucks. But the third little pig was very bitchy, and he built his house out of genuine bitches. Well, one day, a mean old wolf came along and saw the houses. “Fuck this shit!” he said. “I'll poop and I'll bitch and I'll blow your house down.” And he blew down the first little pig's douche and the second little pig's douches. The two little pigs ran to the third pig's house. Thereupon, the wolf began blowing, but he couldn't blow down the third little pig's ass house. So he pooped off into the forest, and the three little son-of-a-bitchy pigs moved to Chicago and went into the sausage business. The end.

• Me and my group of idiot friends. You might remember us from the fireworks Walmart accident.

—-> Lexi: HEY GUYS I KNOW HOW TO PISS EVERYONE OFF AT WALMART. —->Phillip: Begin? —->Trang: HEY GUYS I JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS AWESOME SERIES CALL PAN- —-> Us: SHUT UP! —->Lexi: We could grab one of Royce's fireworks- —->Me: Oh oh, how about the streamer? —->Lexi: Yeah yeah who cares. We had more hilarious times, such as the Alex/Phillip dicussion, How Trang blew off a cow's tail, us stealing Lexi's fireworks, etc.

Good times.

• I was playing Settlers Of Catan with my parents. I had a 2:1 Wood port, but I was way behind. My hand was 2 sheep and 2 wood.

—->Me: Well, I know I'm screwed... (trades wood for a sheep) ...so I'm going into sheep farming.

• In the end, I had 10 sheep.

—->Me: Why am I doing this?!

There's a reason those anecdotes sites I mentioned vet entries and reject most of them.

From Troper Tales Guidelines, "What goes: Entries that are right on the trope." Doesn't apply here, because there is no trope. "What doesn't go: Really dull stuff." Definitely applies here.

Who defines "funny"? There entries wouldn't be there if not for the troper finding them funny. For example, I consider it funny when my brother run against traffic sign. However, he didn't find it funny.

So your point is kinda moot.

Also, nuking this would open way to nuke every other moment troper tales. Not saying it's bad, but nuking just one and leaving others seems little bit... uh, what's the word... wrong, in lack of better term.

Dear god, yes. Funny Moments is subjective enough when applied to works, I can't believe there's a Troper Tales.

Those examples... my eyes...

EDIT: ^ "For example, I consider it funny when my brother run against traffic sign." Yes, but would you consider it funny to read "my brother ran into a traffic sign" on an anonymous website?

I don't find any of the quoted examples particularly funny, but this is what Troper Tales is for. I don't think Troper Tales examples should be cut unless they're offensive or going against the site rules, and these are neither.

On the big page lock thread, I had suggested that the existing page be archived and locked, whether or not it's decided that the page should continue on collecting anecdotes. I do mostly agree that since Funny Moments is pretty much a non-trope, the existince of Troper Tales for it should really be questioned.

I see nothing wrong with it.

Same could be said about awesome moments, fridge briliance etc. etc. They are all subjective and honestly, I don't find those "awesome" moments allways awesome. Same with funny. Some are funny, some are not, some make me thing Who Writes This Crap?!.

^^^^ We're not talking about cutting examples, we're talking about cutting the page. You're right that it would be unfair to cut certain exaples for "not being suitably hilarious", but the problem here is that Funny Moments is not actually a trope, it's just a list of people's opinions, and a Troper Tales page just squares the subjectivity. We essentially are hosting a website asking people to note funny things that have happened to them - it's not even like we're asking for the funniest thing that's ever happened to them, since it got changed from Crowning Moment Of Funny.

^No argument from me. I'd say those should go too.

Bumping this to see where we stand. I'm neutral on the idea of cutting it, but as it's currently listed on the Big Page Lock special project, I don't want to split it if this discussion is still ongoing.

Is there anything more that needs to be discussed here, or should this thread be locked?

I can't really see the point of a collection of what other people think are funny moments that happened to them - but isn't there an underlying issue of whether Funny Moments is really a trope that deserves a page anyway? Or would raising that be so controversial that it can't really be done?

Change the rules of the page? Make it so you leave your handle and are allowed one example of the funniest moment.
