Following on from some recent threads about particularly badass deeds or photos, I give you Acting Sergeant Dipprasud Pun of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, who's been all over the papers here today after winning the Conspicious Gallantry Cross.
He was on sentry duty in Afghanistan, alone, at night, when he heard a noise and realised two insurgents were digging a trench outside to set a bomb. Shooting broke out and he was pinned down for over 15 minutes as around 30 Taliban attacked his post with A K47s and RP Gs. He responded with a machine gun, a rifle and a grenade launcher, firing over 400 rounds and 17 grenades at the insurgents. When he ran out of ammunition, he battered one insurgent with a sandbag, then a machine gun tripod, whilst shouting in Nepali: "I will kill you!"
Eventually reinforcements turned up and the Taliban retreated. Apparently then his company commander arrived, casually slapped him on the back and asked if he was OK. His comment on the matter yesterday - "As soon as I opened fire, that was gone - before they kill me I have to kill some." The Gurkha reputation lives on...
