I don't think this is falling out of use. People just use stuff like Skype or Oovoo now.

Nothing will ever beat talking to a person face to face.

I have never called/IMed anyone "just to talk". I see no reason to talk in the absence of a preselected subject to talk about. I heard of people doing that sort of thing when I was a teenager, but I figured it was just a girl thing.

I never understood the appeal of texting using a number pad; how it is faster than talking on the phone?

It took me minutes just to type out a single sentence.

I use I Ms or text messages (and phone) as a way to say "see you in a moment". I hate carrying conversations with them.

I mainly text people when using the phone - unless the person cant text (e.g. older women, or my main man in TN who uses his home phone w/no texting - thats what forum posting and skype iming is for). Talking to people on the phone sucks ass, especially if the signal is bad or distorted (or you're in a bus stop or on a bus or wheverever it is loud at. OR depending on the culture its not acceptable to talk on the phone on the subway - as in Tokyo), or you cant/wont pay attention to inflection/tone/etc in the calls. Also texting uses less battery power as its better for when my phone is about to die (need to replace the battery). Also it uses less physical energy to text than talk and wear your voice out or get tired...

tl;dr talking on the phone drains social batteries, and isnt good in loud/distorted areas.

Yes it is. It also allows concepts to be put down more effectively than if you talk, depending on the situation. You can type like you type on this forums with capitalization and periods, or you can type like you're a 13 year old white suburban girl on AIM - both are useful for different situations.

Its a hell of a lot easier for my to type political and cultural shit than to explain on the phone. Less 'boring' to the other side too (yes I have done that while texting people, as in I have gone Wallof Text mode while texting)

I make it a point not to contact other people without a subject in mind. If I don't have one in mind then massive pauses with nothing happening ensure.

I hate talking on the phone. Why? Because when I try to talk to anyone I don't know well (and often even then) my speech system locks up, and I can't get out what I want to say. Face-to-face is even worse.

I vastly prefer text-only mediums such as forum posts, email and IM sessions. I don't like SMS or IRC, though. Typing on a mobile phone is a pain in the neck, and IRC just throws you too much too handle at once if there are more than two or three other people in the session.

Accidental mistakes are forgivable, intentional ones are not.

I've never done this. Mostly because I don't have a mobile phone.

Have called people "just to talk" on Skype though; mostly family, whom I call once a week or so. E-mail frequently. Have exactly one MSN contact. Lurk on IRC all the time; rarely if ever type anything. Prefer face-to-face contact, despite being very bad at it.

... So I may not be the most social of people -_-

My girl wants to start a long phone conversation at 9:00 pm sharp every day.

I also hate signing my texts "Tarnim".

"Tarnim" sounds like the Hebrew plural for "Yosemite Sam talk." tongue

I hate talking on the phone for more than like a minute, but can text back and forth for an hour no prob. I find the fact I can divide my attention between the texting conversation and something else to be an advantage. That and I answer the phone professionally at work, screw that noise in my time off.
