I installed DOOM to my computer today, and ran through the first episode on Ultra Violence. The nostalgia trip has inspired me to challenge all of you. Can be a 12.0 on a 10.0 scale of badness and answer my call of speedrunning? Are you bad enough a space marine to escape Phobos?

Here are the rules:

  • You must beat the first episode of DOOM, "Knee-Deep in the Dead", on Ultra Violence difficulty in one go and time it, including time spent between levels or when the game is paused, if you pause it.
    • Timing begins as soon as you've selected the difficulty and ends the moment the ending text scroll appears.
  • Entering and beating the secret level is not required.
  • If you die, you're allowed to start the level over with just the pistol, as the game grants you to do, but you're not allowed to load up the level with your weapons intact.
    • The time lost due to dying counts against you.
  • You may use a source port to play the game, to play it on a modern computer, but you may not use any cheats from a game mod to hasten your play. Playing with a mouse is allowed, obviously.
  • Any sequence skips that exist in the original game are allowed, but cheats are forbidden. Jumping, which exists in most source ports, is forbidden, since levels are designed without it in mind.

On my first try of consciously timerunning the campaign (about a half hour after beating it on my regular pace), I clocked at 24 minutes and 5 seconds. I can beat the time, myself, but I want someone else to give it a try first.

Be a man-and-a-half. Play with me.

edit: Here are download links to the (legal and free) DOOM shareware, which contains the first episode, as well as a source port to make it playable for a modern computer:

I remember playing Doom back in the DOS days. [lol] Great game, still fun to boot up once in a blue moon. I'm not a speedrunner though. Cool idea, however.

I think PR Boom or PR Boom GL would be better engines for speedrunning. It's sorta the standard for folks who want to record demos of normal levels.

With Z Doom and variants on the other hand, you'd need FRAPS or something.

I don't really assume to see video clips of people's runthroughs. I sure didn't record any from mine, and I believe we can go with the honour system here and trust people's claims for their times.

The source port I linked was just the first one I found that works on my computer. I used to play Doom Legacy on my previous computer, but I couldn't get that to work today.
