Whelp, the article isn't clearing much up, just that four people have been shot (and that's terrible, thank you for telling me) and the man has been arrested. My money is on the fact that he's domestic nutcase who got really angry.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

I have a question. Do people really have that strong a response when two people die from a shoot out? I mean, I am really honestly baffled by that reaction. I mean, yeah it's not good but is it really worthy of news?

News at eleven, people dead from guns! Shot by person with mental issues!

I mean what is this telling me about the world that I didn't know before. Will it stop me from getting o a plane to Frankfurt tomorrow? Not in the least. It has no bearing on my life and doesn't even have bearing on the lives of people in Frankfurt who weren't directly involved.

I don't care. No one uninvolved should care. Why do you care?

Can you classify something as terrorism if it targets soldiers? Certainly seems to be political in nature but I guess it could just be a nutter.

[up] You just spent a lot of time talking about something you don't care about. I wonder if you show up to a football game just to tell people it's a waste.

[up][up]Because it happened and the news, because it's the news, covers it. They can choose what to cover and since getting more views means more money, they're going to use dramatic cases like shootings over say... the latest bill that will be going slowly through the legislative process of having lots of people read it.

Because it's in Europe. And in a major airport, so there's that.

I can understand if shootings aren't so much of a shock in *glances at location* ...America. Ah, there's your problem.

Maybe because it happened at an airport (ninja'd)?

And I imagine it's given a higher profile due to the fact that it's US military personnel that were targeted, rather than a bus full of randoms.

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.

I wouldn't care if it was at JFK. I don't care about random acts of violence. I didn't care about virgina tech. I didn't care about Gabrielle Giffords.

Random acts of violence are not indicative of anything other than a symptom of one persons craziness. If you want to run a story on the poor state of mental hygiene, go ahead. Or if you want to talk about gun control. FINE. BUT A STORY ON THE SHOOTING? That is the least important part of the story.

I don't know, I'd say the effect is the most important part (thus, who got shot). It actually tells us the results and the changes that occurred compared to say... what could result or occur.

The effect is death which is still last I checked holding steady at 100%. The actual shooting is the most mundane part of the story. Whats worse people will inevitably conclude that they need more security instead of realizing that random violence is just part of doing business with humanity.

But the death is before natural causes kick in and therefore unusual.

More people died from auto crashes in the time we have been posting than died in that airport. A hundred people died from violence in the time that it took to write that story... conservatively.

The story just happened, we can't dissect it till we know what the hell just happened, this could be an actual terrorist attack, so don't call it a random act of violence till you know what the fuck happened. Jesus christ.

And then why is it being reported on before we know what happened? It is so stupid that we feel that a rush to the presses is the best choice. If it is a concerted conspiracy we won't know for weeks and it will be years before prosecution takes place.

There is NO new information that this headline conveys that a two sentence blurb in the back of the international section couldn't have conveyed.

EDIT: Hell, your from Brooklyn too. The last time a public notice mattered was the Maxsim Gellman thing and that was because he was actually still on the loose and STABBING people.

And this is the internet, why wait to inform people that a shooting took place when you can just update the page when new information arrives?

Hey, it's not like it's important news. It's quite a shock, but it's probably not going to hold much sway in the news for long.

I'd agree that the coverage of news like V Tech and Columbine is fairly appalling; the amount of publicity given over to that kind of nutter is terrible. Charlie Brooker said it better than anyone:

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck.

I knew one of those guys. The two dead are Security Forces troops.

Maybe I'll have words to express how I feel later, but right now all I can really convey to you guys is that I'm feeling a combination of rage, sadness, more rage, and some more sadness.

Why the fuck are the germans so angry? On my stopover coming home from downrange at the same airport, we got spit on by german citizens walking by while we waited in the terminal.

What the fuck. I hope our german troper can come in and discuss this.

I don't know what feeling is taking priority, the anger or the sadness, but god damnit I'm in an illogical state of mind right now that suggests catching a flight to Berlin to exercise the sin of Wrath.

Yeah, as far as you can trust the German news sources.

That said, I'm sorry for your loss, Barkey. I offer my condolences.
