I realize that a lot of things had been done already but my real worry is being compared to the work I am 'imitating'. I decided to go through with my writing but I wonder if I can continue with what I am doing?

That is exceptionally vague. I can offer equally vague general advice, but no one can give suggestions about whether you should continue your story if we don't know: 1) anything about your story, 2) anything about the story you're afraid of being compared to, 3) anything about why the stories are similar/different.

Lacking that, here is a vague encouraging statement: There is nothing new under the sun, so don't worry about being called an "imitator." Even specific plots can be unique if you take care to develop the story, setting, characters, and some such.

Also, not to diss originality, but being called an imitator isn't the worst thing ever. The only reason I read Percy Jackson And The Olympians is because someone described it as "Harry Potter with the Greek gods." If you have confidence in your idea, go for it, and forget about what other people might say.

There are a lot of fics out there that do similar things. As long as you're not blatantly ripping off someone else's fic, you should be fine.

So what?. You can deconstruct it another way.

I wrote an article about originality please read it "how to be Be Original". Set yourself as a goal doing it better, but your own way.

Genres are reconstructed and deconstructed all the time that's not original. Giving your own spin of things is.
