No there isn't anything inherently wrong with it, but god damn Maher is annoying. I don't hate him or anything. I just ignore him because he's never done anything but annoy the ever living hell out of me.

On God being hateful or jealous: This isn't the only interpretation that exists and once again not everyone finds the Bible to be valid. Just as there is no proof of God's existence either way there is no proof on the nature of God either way.

^I wasn't and I have asked many, many Christians and clergy members. I've also asked other religious groups. I've only rarely been reacted to negatively. Even among SUPER STRICT CATHOLICS and the like. Tone. Tone and wording are very important. If you need to lie about your intentions and opinions then do so.

No, I mean, do you have a reason to believe in math and science, and that it's better (by some criteria) than religion?

And yes, Buddhism is a religion. Here, you'll like this.

On valentines day, they held a thing about love. About how love is more of a decision than a feeling, meaning that even though you might think its a feeling, that eventually fades. for everyone. Love is the decison to stay no matter what, no matter what may come, or what has come, to always be there for them, that's love. I took that to heart, because it made sense. It had nothing to do with god hating or really anything negative in any shape matter or form. My local church is a pretty positive enviroment in general, overflowing with positive energy :/ So i'm not quite sure what you're on about.

God is an excuse for things from ancient times that they couldn't enplane. Who's responsible for lightening, Zeus. Who's responsible for earthquakes, Poseidon. Why did this guy spontaneously combust, god did it.

[up][up]Buddhism is a philosophy. its religious aspects are from Hinduism.

Rizu: If you were referring to me, I was pointing out that Humanist and UU services are likely to have similar talks/sermons/whatever, and you might find it easier to go to one of those than stay at your current church. If you like it there, that's fine.

And that's one interpretation. Others such as myself believe that if God/gods/mystical force does exist he/they/it is the one who set up existence and our fancy scientific laws and such. This does raise questions about what created God/gods/mystical force though and those ponderings are fun. As well as questions about what he/they/it now does.

"Buddhism is a philosophy and any and all spiritual aspects come from Hinduism so therefore it's not a religion": Every time this is said the Maitreya Buddha strangles a kitten in the future.

[down]That is why he strangles future kittens.

I can't even go in their without face palming every 5 minutes. "Ask god and you'll get what ever you want." When I was a kid my grandmother was dieing of lymphoma, i asked got to save her, she died the next day. after that I started reading the bible...not the kid version with the smiling animals, the big fucking book in the pews, it had nightmares for weeks.

[up]SOME religious aspects are from Judaism, you didn't count the new testament.

And not everyone believes that praying will get you what you want. DUN DUN DUN.

^It's very silly and nonsensical. I have never once pretended that my beliefs make sense and are not silly.

SOME religious aspects are from Judaism, you didn't count the new testament.

You can't seriously believe that every aspect of Buddhist metaphysics was written before Gautama showed up. Well, you could, but you'd be very wrong.

Aon: Fair enough, but then it doesn't seem useful to get on Van's case for taking issue with things that a large amount of religious people seem to believe.
