Yeah one of my friends went to Austria and mentioned the same thing (about them always using English with them).
To be honest, I don't know if that is how it is still. What I've heard came from a teacher who had done it years ago.

It might be different in France. They have a reputation for being rude to foreigners, but I don't know how true that is.
Speaking of stereotypes, what stereotypes about Canada have you guys encountered?

I remember when I was little a couple of kids from Detroit didn't believe that I was from Canada but I don't remember why. I think they might have invoked the "Everyone has a polar bear thing" but then again the were pretty young so it's a little justified.
Greetin's fellow Canadians. I'm Stones, though most people know me as Newfie (see if you can guess why). Just wanted to introduce myself is all.
GIVE ME YOUR FACEGreetings. What's it like on the east coast? I've always wanted to visit, but I don't have the time or money at the moment.
Pretty good. Mostly warm days with a few cool ones. It's most always sunny and the water sparkles like a thousand sapphires. The breakers crash against the rocks in a wall of white foam, like a herd of stampedin' white horses. Yeah it's fuckin' pretty here >_>
GIVE ME YOUR FACECanadian here, I don't think I've noticed this thread before.
Apparently people believe we have cold-resist superpowers. Let's not disillusion them, eh?
Join my forum game! What, you can't do that?
That is how we really ice fish.
Also I'd watch it if I were you Seer >:|

GIVE ME YOUR FACEI hope you realize that was a joke, my grandmother's a newfie.
I hope you realize that I was jokin' :P
Also if you're Nan is a Newfie then you are a Newfie to. A quarter Newfie is a full Newfie.

GIVE ME YOUR FACEwell obviously i'm a self loathing quarter newfie
I just remembered there was a blog called How to Spot a Canadian. It essentially made fun of Canadian stereotypes and culture: They want a Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup... but not the Leafs, Their Milk Comes in Bags etc.

But my milk doesn't come in bags.
Eh, but I'm a SK-er (Writing out the full name requires too much eeeeeeeeeefffffffffffffffffffort) so of course we'd be weird like that.
I think that wanting international recognition is far Canadian and unifying than the milk in bags thing, which seems to exist only in Ontario.
I just shorten it to Sask, which happens to work for my city as well. :P
@Frosty Yeah I know. I was so confused about that at first too.
Does anyone want to hear a funny (and not racist, I swear) story about some folks from Ontario in mexico.
@Eldrich I don't know the disclaimer just makes me more wary
So, these people are sitting across the table from us in a Japanese restaurant.

The suishi get's there, and the lady's all like "IT'S RAW!!!! D: CAN'T YOU COOK IT!?"

GIVE ME YOUR FACE
Oh wow. Granted, I've never actually been on an exchange, but I never came across anything like that when I was considering one. One thing I did find out from some friends who went on the German exchange, is that they didn't get to practice German very much, because locals would hear the poor German and switch to English out of courtesy.
