EDIT: I keep coming across posts of mine that had to be an act. I probably won't nuke all of my posts (it'd be a hassle) but felt compelled to nuke this.

If there are too few women, then it is very possible for a race to die out due to lack of children, especially if this race is particularly vulnerable to predators.

If there are too few men, then a few (un)lucky bastards get all the sex, the women get quite pregnant, and the race continues.

That's how I see it.

Apparently in ecology, when they're doing population surveys, sometimes they don't even count the males.

The only issue that would make coming back from a low-male situation difficult is the drop in genetic diversity and general inbreeding problems.

Be not afraid...

Well, if you're just calculating population size, then of course you count all the members. If you want to determine population growth, however, then there's literally no reason to count the males, as a population's growth depends solely on the number of fertile females around (assuming there exists a bare minimum of males to get them all pregnant).

Yeah, considering that a herd of cattle usually has a few hundred cows and one bull.

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

Even then, that wouldn't be much of an issue if what was left of the male population was genetically diverse.
