Local multiplayer is the best kind of multiplayer. No communication issues, no servers, no lag, the other player can't be as much of a dick... It really is how games were meant to be played. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the halo series, but you can rely on me have a copy of reach at my house for when my friends show up. Damn near anything can be fun with 4 people.

The problem with competitive local multiplayer is that your opponent can look where you are on your section of the screen and come after you.

And besides, Skype+online multiplayer kills the communication advantage of local.

It seems to work best with a huge screen. I remember hearing some people were able to play Super Smash Bros Melee on a slightly smaller than usual Theater screen.

[up] As long as it's not off-topic and adds something new, it's fine. It's better than remaking the topic.

No it doesn't. Skyping with someone is only a little bit like having them in the same room. You still can't punch people through Skype, unless they've done some great upgrades recently that I haven't heard about.

When you're playing online, you're playing the game... with some friends (hopefully).

When you're playing local, you're playing with some friends, on a game.

Fond memories of playing Goldeneye64 four-way free-for-all on a dinky little 15" CRT TV set. Starfox64 was also hella fun like that. Ah, the joys of barracks life in the late Nineties.
