I think part of it is because she made her first playable appearance in the poorly received Capcom Fighting Evolutionnote  which gave her a bad first impression. Her sudden appearance in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max didn't help either because it felt shoehorned in.

There's a line in SFA 3 Max suggesting she's the true owner of the Psycho Power which turned out to be a mistranslation, but not many people know that and ran with that. Another point I see is the fact she looks like a schoolgirl which I'm going to play the hypocrite card on people that use that point because they have no problems with Sakura or Karin despite being schoolgirls.

My dislike for her comes mostly from her relevance to Psycho/Soul Power adding more questions to something I thought was answered.

Help me. I can't get it out of my head.

but you just admitted that the Soul power connection is mistranslation

I'm not crazy about guest characters who clash with the general atmosphere in the story/setting, like Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur.

Granted It gave us Vader dual wielding Soul Edge and Soul Calibur

but Yoda was the BANE OF HELL who thought making a character practically immune to 1/3rd of your attacks was a good idea?

Don't forget having to create a second set of Critical Finish cutscenes.

[up][up]I don't appreciate the Starkiller erasure.

Okay, I just had a crazy idea, tell me if this is nuts or not.

You know how most fighting games have a Grab and Command Grabs? Grab is a universal basic mechanic that ignores block, but it can be beaten by jumping or teching. While Command Grabs are character-specific moves that ignore block and can't be tech'd, but still can be beaten by jumping?

What if there were a game where teching works for all Grabs, including Command Grabs? Is that a thing, are there any games that do that, where jumping isn't the only way to beat a grab, you also have teching as effectively a universal Grab Parry?

Tekken immediately comes to mind. Most grabs in the game can be parried if you hit the right button to parry it, with exception to back grabs, and can be broken by looking at which arm is leading the throw animation.

So, Max Dood released a video rating character select music. How much do you agree with his opinions?

I just realized this.

I don't think Capcom has any weapon based fighting games.

They have characters who fight with weapons in this games, but for the most part, don't have any games where everyone fights with a weapon.

My fighting game pals and I were screwing around, and I came up with an idea that I can't decide is "seems awful but might actually work" or just "is exactly as awful as it sounds:"

A character who can't normal throw (they might have command throws), but every time they tech/break a throw it instead becomes a throw reversal, leading to a throw that does more damage than other characters' normal throws.

[up] Does Cyberbots count... maybe? It's mechs, but the mechs are using weapons, but the weapons aren't standardized or anything (you can choose which ones you use), but iirc all the combatants have to be using at least one.

That's a lot of "but"s, though.

...I know this is Nintendo, not Capcom... but does ARMS count as a weapon fighting game? I mean, they're punching, but all of the gloves are unique weapons with different effects and abilities.

I'm gonna go with no, since despite the bells and whistles they very much focus on it being a Boxing-esque sport.

Arms have boxing gloves with missles, chakrams, and even a whole mech so yes it counts.

Also the music tier list was fun, and it seems a part 2 is in the mix as well. "Blue Beating" is one of if not my favorite character select screen so im glad it got a good score. Hopefully they do the Persona Ultimax select screen next time.

Are there any playable old women in fighting games? I can think of a few old men (Heihachi, Roshi), but the only old woman that comes to mind is Genkai in that one mediocre Yu Yu Hakusho fighter.

I mean visibly old, with wrinkles and maybe graying hair, no old women who look young (which technically still applies to Genkai, albeit not in her default state).

Hey I liked that mediocre Yu Yu Hakusho fighter. Dark Tournament, right?

Anyways Power Instinct has a pair of them that eventually go the Ryu and Ken route. They have the "Become young as a temporary powerup" thing going on.

(There's also one in Senran Kagura, who also has an alternative version where she becomes young)

[up][up]Skullgirls has Black Dahlia, an old mercenary who has decades of experience fighting Skullgirls and loves to murder. Her face is constantly hidden by a veil and she has robotic parts over large portions of her body, so unfortunately no wrinkles or stuff like tat can be seen, but she does have animations where she gets back cramps from overexertion and has an old granny voicepack.

Okay, so that arthropod fighting game might not be happening. Or it might be. I dunno. To put things simply, Bogleech backed out and won't be helping, so currently all I've got is 27 pages of notes on everything and movesets for half the roster. I don't want all that work to go to waste, but I'm feeling kinda hopeless right now. I still want to get it made, but I don't see how.

In other news, anyone familiar with Virtua Fighter 3tb? Apparently it's an update of VF3 that focused on team battling.

In any case, it's coming back to Japanese arcades on November 28 as Virtua Fighter 3tb Online!

Boasting online battles based on the technology of Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, allowing players to challenge other users across the country. Plus, VF3tb Online offers Aime card support to allow users to display their player names and records, which can be edited and viewed on vf3tbonline.net.

The only downside to all this is that this is all exclusive to Japan. No word on any international releases.

Sega Addresses Demand for New Virtua Fighter Game.

In an interview with The Washington Post (archived by Time Extension), co-COO of Sega Corporation and Sega of America CEO Shuji Utsumi addressed the absence of Virtua Fighter from the lineup of revivals announced at The Game Awards. Utsumi, revealed that he agrees the fighting game franchise is overdue for a brand-new entry, and that the company is evaluating the potential for a new title. "We are evaluating right now. Virtua Fighter doesn’t use so many tricks, special moves like in Street Fighter, it’s very realistic. How can we make it more dramatic? It’s something we’re working on," says Utsumi.

There's a lot of Wing Chun characters in fighting games based on Bruce Lee's flashier moves, but man would I be down for more Wing Chun characters with more traditional Wing Chun moves, like the kind the Ip Man movies emphasized.

I think you can see a bit more influence of it these days in some new stuff for SF 6's Chun-Li or Tekken 8's Law, but, like, a full on Donnie-Yen-As-Ip-Man homage as a character? I'm so down.

There are so many fighters around the world that fighting games need. I've always thought it was interesting that Mike Tyson references or just straight-up appearances are all over video games but I can only think of maybe one or two Muhammad Ali references character. I mean, I know the actually reason is probably that Mike Tyson is One Of Us and loves that stuff whereas Ali's estate probably doesn't and shuts such things down, but still.
