I can buy her being back due to magic sword and Heroic Sacrifice. It's a magic setting and you want things to happen. That part doesn't bother me. What does bother me is bad writing.
She's not just back, she's also an entirely different person than she was when she died.
In God of War II, she sacrificed herself to protect Zeus, insisting that the Olympians must survive.
In God of War III, she speaks of some experience that happened to her after death to clarify her vision and seeks for Kratos to kill all the Olympians so she can take the light of Hope for herself and "spread her message", whatever that means.
Ghost Athena is a completely different character from Athena.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I don't know what the rest of that argument was about, but
Hence, they still have to resolve (that little plot thread).
I'd thought that Athena had become one of the Roman gods, and the game was just using her ghostly form as a metaphor of some kind. The resurrection does bear some foreshadowing, its left completely unexplained in III and Ascension is a prequel.
It'd be heinous for her not to reappear.
I didn't finish Ascension out of disgust, so I probably missed the Fury's murals or any Christianity-symbolizing images they showed.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!It wasn't in Ascension, it was in God of War II. When you're in the Fates' chambers near the end of the game, there's a set of murals that show Kratos rallying the Titans and overthrowing Olympus, before the final mural cryptically showing the Three Wise Men following the North Star. This implies that Kratos killing all the gods is the reason why Jesus could be born and the Abrahamic God could rise to power.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.The murals were in the original God of War, back when they thought they'd never make a sequel to the game, when Kratos was hailed as the new God of War that would be govern all the wars humanity would cause in the future, including the modern wars of our time as we see shots of planes and tanks, and back when Deimos was shown to be trapped in Hell, became a demon, and wished vengeance on the brother who abandoned him, as seen here.

Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!Not the murals we're talking about. I'm referring to these:
One Man Stands Alone in the Aftermath
These glimpses of the future were seen in the Fates' chamber at the end of God of War II.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.That last one could also be symbolic you know.
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!Really, all of those things were in the fates' chamber in GOW II? I must have missed it. Anyway, I'm surprised and happy to see that God of War is back. It will be interesting to see what the developers will do with Kratos in Norse mythology.
Ditto, I remember the murals inside Gaea's stomach from III, and the Deimos extra from I.

The only Norse gods I'm remotely familiar with are Loki, Thor, Odin. (SHOCKER) I kind of hope Loki is some man-beast like the Fates and Furies were, and not some shirtless, bronze god everybody wants to sleep with.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I would be totally be down for Kratos reenacting Hulk vs Loki.
Kratos is totally going to take Vidar's job in slaughtering Fenrir, isn't he?
PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyLoki's a shapeshifter he can be whatever he ****ing wants
Loki will survive because he's the only god smart enough to realize that screwing with Kratos is suicide.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I honestly think the fans would take issue with the new "daycare simulator" before the weapons.
Again, really hope its like The Last of Us and Little Kratos just stabs and shoots people competently, and not God of War Infinite where Kratos Jr stands around, glances at wall paintings, picks up nickels and throws them to Kratos, and occasionally bends the fabric of space and time to give you spare arrows or something.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Word of God confirms that the kid doesnt need to be guarded as a friendly NPC, so Im not worried about that.

Btw, what happened to Athena at that ? I mean, if she still trailling Kratos or is she still doing ghost stuff somewhere ? I don't remember her fading away or something.
Fallout 2? More like Fallout 2 bad.Wouldn't be surprised if she showed up under a new alias.....
I can't help but wonder if Kratos is going to end up with Mjolnir and Gungir. There's I think a couple other major Norse weapons, but those are the two big ones.
Click Click Boom BoomI'll be surprised if Kratos doesn't kill Thor and steal his weapon.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Thor is definitely going to be a major player one way or another. In addition to his obvious popularity, his anger issues will make him a good parallel for Kratos no matter which way they decide to develop Kratos.
Or he'll show up for one boss battle and get butchered in short order like Heracles.

I want the nature of the conflicts with the gods to be different this time.
I didn't play Go W 3 so I only have a cliffs notes understanding of what went on in that game besides the ending and certain details but the greek gods in general were more or less assholes, and if Kratos was a better person you might even be able to get behind him going after them, or at least finding it understandable.
Maybe in this game we can have more tragic fights with the gods instead, Kratos actually doesn't want to fight but is forced to and the gods themselves are more sympathetic/charismatic.
Gods don't leave corpses to beat a ghost into. Every god disintegrates, explodes, or otherwise releases all their power upon death. Even Zeus; his body vomits lightning into the heavens upon his death, destroying his surroundings and leaving no remains.
Athena did the same, disintegrating in glowing green shreds upon death.
