Considering that the Fan Translation even added a Bestiary that was also a practice tool, it's automatically somewhat better than the original.

Wait...the original game has a Bestiary/Practice tool. I imported the game, and it's there and perfectly accessible at all times.

Hate to say this, but the exporting Mother 3 ship has sailed. There's pretty much no chance for it now.

My lawyer advised me not to download it... At least I'll always have my $90 caterage of Earth Bound.

...Wait. You think you'll be sued by downloading something that Nintendo themselves have already given the thumbs-up to? I mean, even if they suddenly did send a Cease-and-Desist, it wouldn't effect the countless hundred-thousands who download it. In the worst case scenario, which would be very unfortunate and highly unlikely, Tomato(The main developer of the Fan Translation) would be the one to be sued.

^x3 Pick up a legit copy and self-dump the ROM if you don't feel comfortable downloading it. That's what I did. Of course I also got lucky and happened to find a retro gaming shop during a trip to Asia...

[up][up]I was kind of debating on whether to say thousands or hundred thousands. Sorry for choosing the larger one out of the two....

I say, go ahead and download the fan translation.

If Hell freezes over and Nintendo releases Mother 3 stateside, delete it and buy the real thing.

^^ Even thousands I'd hesitate to say. I'd put it in the hundreds.

^ Revise your guess up by a factor of a couple hundred and you've got the number of Week 1 downloads of the patch.  *

There's a reason why everyone talks about that fan translation.

^He has no reason to do so. His place in the natural order of this forum is to moderate any enthusiasm regarding Nintendo's releases or aspects thereof.

Keep in mind that not everyone who downloads it will buy it. In fact, since it's been available on the internet for so long some people who would have bought it now won't because they've already played it. Only a certain fraction of people who play the game are going to be devoted and loyal fans, and only devoted and loyal fans will spend money to play something they've already played.

And even of that, how many would pay full retail price (you don't honestly think they'd bring it over just to give it a budget price, do you?) for a game that would be two generations out of date by the time it releases?

Considering how I actually own a physical copy of MOTHER 3, and the fact that any theoretical stateside distribution at this point would be digital (because everyone knows that those $10 price points on the VC are total ripoffs), I can heartily say yes, yes I would.

Oh and judging by the fact that Earthbound and MOTHER 3 currently occupy spots in the Top 3 for most demanded VC releases, I'm fairly confident that I wouldn't be alone.

Are you always this negative about Nintendo games, BTW?

I'm always amused when people think that petitions work. I'm even more amused in this case, since it's about a game for the GBA. I'm pretty certain that no GBA game will be released anymore.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

[up][up] Well just because they want Mother 3 dosen't mean they expect it on it's native consle.

It's still not going to happen, though.

Believe me when I say I do want to play it: I am just concerned about the legal reprocussions of doing so.
There are no legal repercussions. It would be financially impossible to devote legal resources to prosecuting people for downloading games unless they were also circulating them.

[up] What he said. You won't get in any trouble. Unless Mother 3 is still in production, Nintendo won't even loose any money. They don't get anything from secondhand sales.

If you really don't feel confortable loading this, than I'm not going to presure you. But the legal consequences are virtually non-existant and, considering Nintendo actually recomended the fan translation, I don't see any moral issues you can have.

Did a quick Google search. Wikipedia says;

While Nintendo has not provided an official comment on the translation, employees of Nintendo and Square Enix have expressed excitement for the project.[45]
