How to use the 'growing up' theme in a story?

there are lots of works that deal with growing u[ how can use that as a theme where the setting and world reflects the characters growing into adults? In real life, not everyone grows up or grow up in the same manner but how do I use that without it being Anvilicious?

Anyway, you have to have a main character and sorround him with other characters and then create their grows.
