Cosmic horrors that may not be entirely evil. I like Giygas and his growth into a villain (cute lovable alien friend turned genocidal villain for the sake of his kind turned tortured incomprehensible horror). Porky as well. The end boss fights add to the effect too.

I keep siting down to play these games, then some else needs to use the family computer and I forget about it for six months. Clearly I need a laptop. Or a hacked PSP.

A newer (read: 3rd Generation) DS flashcart will also work nicely...

I'm at the same place in both EB and Mother 3—stuck right before the end, going through the penultimate dungeon, kind of having tapered off after it. I really should finish them both...

Strange, I thougth Aon dislikes at least Mother 3...

It's been a while since I played them. I have the odd habit to quickly lose and gain interest in things, which has the result that I rarely complete games. But someday, I will beat all Mother games...

The first chapter of Mother 3 is oddly unsettling to me, for a certain reason. Around the time, I started Mother 3, my mother died (although I wouldn't know about this until a year later). Talk about reality subtext...

That first chapter...

I have yet to see a more emotionally affecting moment in any video game, bar none.

Even though I read already here that Mother 3 tends to be very Mood Whiplash-y, it was quite a suprise. The Mood Whiplash was a little bit too jarring.

And I mean that positively.

You thought I disliked Mother 3? Eh? Where on Earth did you get that idea...I haven't finished the damn thing, but I don't dislike it.

Retrying Mother 1. It's clunky as shit, but holy damn I love the soundtrack.

last time i touched mother 3 i just barely managed to beat the barrier trio and im off to get the final needle.

barrier trio were somehow the hardest boss yet.

i probably wont get the motivation to pick mother 3 back up and finish it untill i hear something awesome from the mother 4 project.

I actually did beat Mother 3 a while back. I had to go to a strategy guide to figure out how to actually get to the end credits in the post-final-boss sequence.

I beat Earthbound this last weekend. Oh man, is this game incredible. And Itoi's insight on Good and Evil being in all of us is awe inspiring. In fact, the use of the words Good and Evil and the religious context (I'm an atheist, so this may also play into my feelings on the subject) seem almost repulsive in all honesty, especially in use to call Giygas the embodiment of evil. He portrays the sense of morality not as a power, but more of a part of something we all have inside of us especially in Ness's journey through Magicant to gain his own kind of enlightenment.

He portrays it more realistically, is what I'm getting at. And I appreciate that. It gives one this nice, teary eyed, heartwarming feeling.

And on gameplay? I don't like turn based RP Gs, but the rolling health counter and extra dialogue to flesh out each battle REALLY gave the game much needed personality and emotional impact and does well to differentiate it from most bland, hyper colourful JRP Gs. This is one of the only JRP Gs I feel is worth playing.

The rolling HP counters also great cause having your HP drop down instead of just blooping to how much health you would have really saves your ass, especially if it's a SMAAAAAASH!! hit or when someone takes mortal damage.

Man, I'm having trouble finding an EarthBound emulation that's in English.

I tried playing Earthbound Zero, but I don't know how to retain saves on my NES emulator.

I have a message from another time...

you know, for earthbound zero you could just eliminate random encounters, turn on a god mode cheat, and go through the game all in one go.

probably a better alternative to actually playing it

mount whatever was particularly painful with encounters and no godmode.

Alternatively, play the GBA version with Tomato's patch. It includes an "Easy Ring" that lowers the encounter rate and makes enemies give more EXP.

You should just be able to save like normal when using Nestopia and it will retain saves. If this doesn't work make use of save states.

As for playing it...I found it amazingly fun to play. It also has some of the best music in the series. THAT 8-BIT AWESOME. Sadly 1+2 had less awesome music.

As for being hard...It's not that bad...

That music...

It's probably my favorite of the series due to it being so...NES rpg. I love the NES...
