Well I had my first false awakening (dreaming that you wake up) ever that I can recall yesterday, and I had two more in quick succession today. I've never really thought much about dreaming, but it's certainly brought the issue to my attention. What I really wonder is how my perceptions of a dream differ from other people.

One interesting thing I noticed is that pinching yourself doesn't actually work. My theory is that in a dream, you perceive something as soon as you think of it. If you are already suspicious, then you're first thought will be "Why am I not feeling X", so there is a slight lag before you actually start feeling it. However, if you make a plan in advance, e.g. to test pinching, than you will have already thought of pain so there is no lag.
