For a first timer to the game, any tips for a newbie in the first Witcher game? Things I should watch out for?

The different sword styles are very important.

Read the research books, they will help you.

Oils and potions are extremely important.

Never neglect to make Swallow.

Use your signs

Also don't forget to periodically clear out your saves because otherwise the game will crash more often.

Burn everything with Igni. Talk to everyone. Sword combat is all about getting your click timing right, so don't worry about parry or dodge or whatever.

[up]My autosaves only went up to 4 and constantly replaced each other. I don't remember doing any configurations on my saves, so I think it was always like that.

I'll be getting Witcher 2 next time it goes on sale. What's the combat like? More traditional third person combat?

Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences.

Yeah, it's more conventional. No timed button presses, but you're also much more mobile. No sword styles either.

I bought The Witcher 2 last week. I I've been playing it for some time. So far, I think it's a decent game. Compared to the third game, it's not as polished and the combat can be a bit frustrating, but the story is nice and the characters are interesting. I'm currently doing chapter 1.

You're not missing TOO much but it could be worth you reading up the basic plot. Some of the actions in 2 were setup in 1. There isn't TOO much continuity though.

The combat is definitely something you have to get used to.

So, I played some more of The Witcher 2. I managed to do a few quests including the Malena quest and the Kayran quest. Overall, I think this game is kind of difficult but at the same time I sort of like it. I died a lot a times, especially when I was fighting the Kayran.

Yeah, you will need oils, potions, and grenades for a large number of fights against bigger monsters. Preparation is key.

So, I managed to fight Letho today. It was a tough fight and I died plenty of times. But once I found his pattern, it was a piece of cake. I chose to side with Roche when he attacked both Ioverth and Letho and I am currently doing the quest where you're looking for Cedric.

Good. Roche is the best side.

Ehhh I quite like Iorveth and his unrequited crush on Saskia! B-Roche was fine but never really felt it as much. But I do like how he ALWAYS stands by you.

I find Iorveth has a far more interesting Act 2 sequence of events than his Act 3. But Roche has a far superior Act 3 sequence of events than his Act 2. So there are trade-offs to either route.

Bump!

So, last week I grabbed The Witcher from Go G's giveaway and I'm early into chapter three.

...money. How do?

Maybe this is intentional but the rewards for completing quests seem barely able to keep up with the stuff you need to buy, much less stuff you want to buy. The bestiary book for a monster might cost 200-300 (even selling the book back after you read) orens to let you do a quest that rewards 100-200. Armor upgrade in the shop is 5k. Sword reforging is 900, Botany books can go up to 400.

Quite intentional. In lore, witchers were often penniless, since the people that required their services the most were peasants who don't have much money in the first place. Even if they did get money from a big contract, the cost of gear and other things made sure they wouldn't have it for long anyway.

Witch is funny by Witcher 3 where Geralt can basically fill a pool with his money.

Indeed. Doing monster contracts and selling loot you get from things like human enemies and whatnot will likely be your main source of revenue, but at least you can pick or collect a lot of potion ingredients from the surrounding environment (and any monsters you kill).

So what expensive things should I be prioritizing then? Should I do a sword upgrade because I can or try to push for the armor?

I'm mostly good on potion ingredients now (herbalist was one of the first talents I grabbed), the main expense for that is the base spirits.

I will confess I skipped the noticeboard quests in the Outskirts because at that stage in the game it didn't look like there was that much interesting to buy besides consumables, inn fees and bribe money. That changed when I got into the city proper.

Mainly focus on weapons and armor for now, if you have enough consumables and stuff to make proper potions.

Dice Poker solved my money problems in the first game.
