If you're looking for an interesting and new run Exactly what I'm aiming for.
Ok, unless I get some great revelation I'm going with these. I think this team will work fairly well.
- Spoink (Give Icy Wind and Shock Wave via XD tutor)
- Cacnea
- Heracross
- Cubone (I have a thick club handy)
Cubone would require a bit more complex breeding than the others because of the moves it needs, but lucky me I have an adamant ditto, a male Tyranitar with rockslide and earthquake and a Cubone all handy.
Any glaring weaknesses I can't counter?
And yes, AA=Aerial Ace, which a bizarrely high number of things get in gen 3.

Speaking of Psychic types that need to be babysat but become very strong, I would suggest trying Abra. Alakazam is better than Gardevoir anyway.
But if you want something interesting, try Aron and its evolutions. Difficult to raise in the early game, but its evolution Aggron is an awesome physical tank.

Out of Context Theater: Mike K "'Bloody Pussies' cracked me up"But ground or fighting type moves wreck it.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more! How about Spinda? :P
The Protomen enhanced my life.Anyways, how about a Smeargle? It's moves are customizable.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Gulpin/Swalot? I loved using him when I had Ruby c:
Shaggy dog stories will ruin your life.I second Aggron.
Ralts works just like Abra in previous games: the Psychic mon that needs babysitting but reams the midgame. If you're looking for an interesting and new run, I wouldn't pick Gardevoir. I'd go for weaker stuff with weird types and stats.
It Just Bugs Me
