In my novel, there is a scene where a Bodyguard has to take his charge out of a military compound under attack. Basically, a stealth assault goes slightly awry and the battle degenerates into a bar fight...with guns. There's a long bit where they're both trying to get out of the building they are in and a lot of close-quarters fighting happens.

It's a 19th century setting. The bodyguard is armed with a fifteen-shot autoloader (based on a Mauser c96), a single-shot pistol and a four-shot revolver. He mostly depends on the autoloader. The opponents are armed with a variety of revolvers and blades (knives and a few swords).

His charge doesn't do anything stupid and manages to keep up; consider her functional for the purposes of this scene.

My question; what would a trained combat veteran concern himself with in such a scenario? Which parts of the scenery would he notice, and which would he discard (and which would he notice and curse himself for the irrelevancy)?

What sensations come with that level of adrenaline?

I'd like real combat veterans to weigh in here, as well as people who've trained for this kind of endeavor (SWAT, etc.); I know several can be found on TV Tropes and I'm looking to make this scene realistic to those who know the difference.

Do you mean It's the actually 19th century or just a time period a lot like it, because modern fire team and house clearing tactics only really got out of the shoot-the-other-guy-before-he-shoots-you stage fairly recently.

A fantastical setting that resembles the 19th century. And I know such tactics weren't codified until recently, but this guy's got 20 some years of experience under his belt and would have learned them by doing it and...you know, not dying. smile
