Like I said, once you look past the big money making franchises, Metroid doesn't look like a black sheep anymore.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackFire Emblem could count, but the series does have comedic moments and bright colors.
I should also mention that Metroid is one of the few Nintendo Titles that look more Western than Eastern.

Hey now, let's not reopen that wound, alright?
@Cider: Well of course not. Beyond the "big money making franchises" is everything. When you're comparing something to everything, it's hard to be the black sheep of anything. The black sheep isn't so special anymore if you're just looking for black animals in general.
If we're going to determine if Metroid's a "black sheep", we'll need a clear standard for it to be a black sheep to, maybe along the lines of "franchises that can reasonably be recognized as "made by Nintendo"", whether it be Mario, to Fire Emblem, to maybe even things like Golden Sun (I don't pay attention to that series, so I wouldn't know if it qualifies). Geist and Eternal Darkness probably wouldn't qualify because, honestly, no one would think "oh hey, that's a Nintendo game" unless told directly, and even then, they'd probably have doubts.
