That awesome trollface... that's it. From now on, my Letty is so tired at the end of winter because she's been taking care of Yukari's trolling quota while the latter hibernates. (which is also why she acts so mean-spirited sometimes; that trolling doesn't just do itself.)

The weird thing is how Cirno can apparently exist all year, being an ice fairy. It was summer when she appeared in EoSD, though the red mist blocking out the sun may have been a contributing factor. I assume the two of them re-meet every year, though, which would make this whole hibernation deal not quite as serious.

I'm a fan of Letty being on good terms with Cirno but in the Fairy Wars manga chapter, Cirno was shown hanging around by herself during the winter and beyond that saying that winter bored her since everything was already frozen.

So then she went to try to freeze the entire lake.

I like the idea that Letty initially was annoyed by Cirno's antics, then slowly took a shine to her naturally infectious cheerfulness.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!

You could say she warmed up to Cirno, but that would just be silly.

Frankly, I think Cirno is annoying. Not that she annoys me personally, but that she's fundamentally kind of annoying. She's the small energetic kid who thinks she knows everything despite knowing nothing, and unlike real kids it is fundamentally impossible for her to grow up, even a little bit. She also has very little respect for other living beings. While someone with either saintlike patience or genius-level manipulation skills might be able to tolerate her, I'd hesitate to ascribe either of those to Letty.

Truly only the strongest in Gensokyo, the Yukaris and the Byakurens of the world, can keep up with Cirno.

Actually, people's win quotes against her in Hisoutensoku seem pretty sympathetic overall. Komachi offered to play with her, and I distinctly remember that a bunch of others treated her in a friendly manner as well.

...maybe it's just because I have a cousin that she reminds me of then.

People in Gensokyo are probably more resistant to that kind of personality. Every fairy is going to be like a hyperactive little kid. So are a lot of the weaker youkai. So are some of the stronger youkai.

If you're easily annoyed, Gensokyo is not the place for you because its full of people who are, intentionally or not, very annoying.

I just got a funny image of Cirno bursting into this isolated cave deep in the ground and yelling "IT'S WINTER! WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP!", waking Letty from her hibernation.

Unless...

She's like some sort of flower that blooms only in winter! She dies when winter is over, and "regrows" throughout the rest of the year in a cave containing a frozen spring that sparkles like a diamond sky.

Maaan. I was half-joking, but this idea is actually re-awakening my interest in Letty. Thinking about the way she came into existence and all that is interesting, because winter really is a goldmine for beautiful imagery. I guess that's the way to go to make more out of her. I guess I could do a little write-uppy thing for her, but not today. I'm procrastinating on an essay outline that is due in a few hours.

Hey, there was this little short-story anthology presenting some underappreciated characters in a more serious light, including Letty... wasn't it this one? Bewitching Kaiseki?

Yeah. It had Mystia, a fairly heart-warming Wriggle, Letty and Daiyousei.

What I find interesting is that Letty is "what winter left behind" but she leaves with winter. The winter comes and dumps a bunch of snow and a Letty. The winter goes and the snow melts and Letty disappears, into a cave or not.

To be fair, to the other characters, Aya is annoying.

Her job requires her to get all up ins people's faces. She's powerful enough that she can't just be brushed aside so people have to put up with her.
