I always just figured all the routes were canon. All the playable characters worked together at the same time.

The forums are gonna shut down soon, aren't they? Aww man. It's really late, but I want to at least get the discussion out there now.

Youkai society contained within the Scarlet Devil Mansion!

I am fully aware that it's a silly idea! It seems like an extreme deviation from canon for no reason other than coolness, but the thing is that the coolness would be tremendous! There are a bunch of pictures, I think, that show such a possibility. Usually using the library. Depicting it as a massive structure with hundreds of people living within. Vaults towering over a collossal chasm. So awesome.

It's not entirely impossible, given that we know that the mansion is larger on the inside. And it is already very large. And it's said to have complex structures in the basement. There's also all the fairy maids, which we can be pretty sure Remi keeps around because they liven up the place more than anything. In fact, given that Sakuya is apparently busy all day in spite of the fact that the mansion apparently has so few residents, it's well possible that she spends a lot of her time just cleaning up after the fairies. But, what if the fairies actually do get some work done? What if there's actually a need for so many maids, and what if fairies aren't the only magical beings Remi keeps around in order to feel like she has actual subordinates that aren't practically family like Meiling?

I really love the image of the mansion having all these food stands and stuff in its court, but unless you're artistic-licensing heavy traffic between Gensokyo and Makai into the setting, there just won't be enough tourists to make such a thing worth it. But if Remilia's mansion actually housed a lot of youkai, it would be about as cool in a different way, it would offer tons of potential for stories, and the idea of Remilia throwing parties that only the mansion residents attend takes on a whole new dimension, which one may or may not consider desirable.

So yeah, I want to discuss this, because I really want to find ways to make this work. In a way that is as awesome as possible with as few egregious affronts to canon as possible.

At the moment, I can only picture non-humanoid youkai and lowly humanoid ones just scuttling about randomly in the dungeons below the mansion. This can get so much better, though! Grr!

Location of New Hell: SDM basement.

The "SDM as city" would probably mean that Koakuma is one of many of her kind.

I'm thinking that maybe most of the sdm population are Koakumas, save for perhaps fairies.

I'm also debating on whether there are other vampires save for flandre and remilia...

That would be boring, though, wouldn't it?

Vampires seem to be very powerful as a default, so it would probably be known if there were any.

How about the future? Sure, the mansion has the six residents plus fairy maids now, but soon Remilia will try and coercice more powerful and exotic things into being her servants in a show of power, and then they will bring thier families, who will bring thier friends, who will bring thier families, until we have an (unintentional) whole city inside one mansion, living and triving all underneath Remilia's command. Sure, it will increase Sakuya's work load. Sure, it will make the fairies actually have to work. Sure, it will make Meiling's job more urgant (she isn't just protecting the mansion, she is protecting a whole nation). Sure it will force Patchy and Flandre to actually interact with people. But it will be all for the best!

At least, until something goes wrong and Reimu decides she has to clean house. (pun) Then Sanae starts attacking the mansion as her youkai hunting training. Then Yuuka attacks the mansion because why not. (Marisa does as always, just this time having to fight through more youkai to get to the yummy books) Soon it escalates into Gensoukyou VS the Scarlet Devil Mansion Nation Mansion. Which would be awesome.

ALSO: if the forum is going down, will this thread still be here when it comes back? Or is it gone forever? (Is not in the know on TV Tropes forum workings, sorry)

That dwarf infestation idea is fantastic... well, I guess it could be anything, not just dwarves. It's possible that in her zeal, Remi had Sakuya create a space that's far too large for them to police properly, and, depending on the nature of space screwery, the mansion interior might border on some really strange places.

ON TOPIC: Just wait until the richer citizens of Scarlet Devil Mansion Nation Mansion start building mansions! And Remilia has a bigger one made because she needs to be bigger than everyone! (Insert Inception joke here)

By the time it reached that point, the SDM would be a megastructure that occupied a large chunk of Gensokyo.

I think that Remilia would just be sure to swing by and rub their faces in the fact that her mansion will always be the biggest because the additions they're building also make hers bigger by definition.

Well, it would be as big as a good chunk of Gensokyo, but it would still be contained in the mansion's (comparatively) modest footprint.

But yes, if the SDM were ever to expand, Remilia would get all the lower youkai to do it for her. She finally gets to put her infinite charisma to good use by manipulating all of them.
