Hatate's comments on everyone basically boil down to 'cool!' or 'gross!', or occasionally 'Hey, I know that girl!'. She does have a pretty good line, commenting that Yamame and Eirin should team up to start an illness/medicine scam* .
EDIT: Hatate seems pretty uninformed when it comes to the other characters. She considers Shou to be a charlatan, she has pretty much no idea who Suwako is, and she thinks that Koishi can still read minds.
EDIT: Mystia got there first, though* .

Heart of StoneIt's a shame no one does L Ps of the game using Hatate, jsut for the dialogue... everyone does it with Aya >_>
Well, she was a shut-in before she started using the Aya method of journalism. She would be behind on the who's who of Gensokyo. Besides, Aya was potentially Reimu's partner when Reimu potentially solved the SA Incident. She would know the people from first hand experience. Potentially.
@Meiling: I heard an interesting theory during the last compendium that Meiling was sort of like the public face of the mansion. At least she would make a better one than Sakuya who is notably cold towards people as opposed to Meiling who will freely talk to people who pass by the mansion.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersAh, deciduous you say. Close enough.
Thing is, after 108 scenes of seizures with Aya, you kind of just don't care about Hatate. At all. Spoken from the heart.
Probably as good as canon. That might not be why she works there, but I'm sure people who have only met her think much higher of the mansion compared to those who've met its inhabitants.
Though this conversation probably already took place in the old thread. TIME PARADOX!

I have no horse, and I must ride. I accomplish unlockments.Luckily Meiling is the stalwart doorbell of the mansion, then. She's much more personable then the arrogant vampire, the psychotic sister, the snippy librarian or Stabby Jack.
Heart of StoneI just noticed that. Meiling is the only member of the SDM cast who doesn't have something about them that would turn people away from them. (Remilia may be spoiled and can be a jerk, Sakuya is cold, Patchy is snippy, the blonde girl is too powerful for her own good, and Koakuma has head wings, which are just strange.)
I do like the "Meiling is the face of the mansion" idea. No one else in the SDM cast would fit the role I guess.
My discussion on Meiling seems to be winding down. Sorry.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Meiling as the public face is pretty sensible, really. Meiling is the one person you are guaranteed to meet if you visit, even if it's just passing by the SDM. The fact that she is indistinguishable from a (very fit) human certainly can't, and she's quite personable too, which is something that neither the Scarlets nor the remaining senior staff have going for them.
I sure said that! She's only personable if approached in the right way. If you come off too aggressive she'll go all 'HALT, INTRUDER!' and kick you in the face.
She may be nice, but she's still got a job to do. A job that, despite what fanon says, she both enjoys and is quite good at it. That's the thing. If she really was that bad a gatekeeper, Remilia would've thrown her out years ago. As far as I know Reimu, Marisa, and a few select characters from Missing Power and Rhapsody got past her* * . Yukari doesn't even count, the woman can teleport; there's no way Meiling could stop that.
EDIT: Remilia could easily be the face of the mansion seeing as it named after her. Formally, it's Remilia, but in an informal setting it'd be the cheerful Chinese gate guardian.

Heart of StoneShe only resorts to violence if you try to sneak past her or come in guns a-blazing. If you just walk up to her, she'd be more than willing to chat. And she does sleep on the job; she's just so light a sleeper that it ultimately doesn't matter.
I sure said that! Her total absence from a certain point of SSIB is kind of sad. Eirin and Reisen just kind of stroll into the mansion and fart around the library.
I mean, there's no way that Meiling could stop Eirin but we get nothing on how she got in.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersRemilia seems like the kind of person who would enjoy meeting strange guests. So rather than Meiling being a good gatekeeper, I think it's more like she's an "interesting person filter". If they can get past Meiling, they deserve to be inside. She's not really meant to stop everyone from getting in. So in that sense she'd keep her job regardless of her actual skill.
Unless she let uninteresting people in.
I have no horse, and I must ride. I accomplish unlockments."Why did you let that dental floss salesman through? Are you trying to tell us something, Meiling?"
She may be nice, but she's still got a job to do. A job that, despite what fanon says, she both enjoys and is quite good at it. That's the thing. If she really was that bad a gatekeeper, Remilia would've thrown her out years ago.
The kind of person would appreciate a friendly, near-human girl at the gate and the sort of person that'd try to break into the SDM are groups without much overlap
I'll take this moment to post about Tenshi:
Canto V*
Angels, beings of light, messengers of the almighty
In my travels across hell and the mountain to heaven
I am one of the few who have witnessed their beauty
But in my journeys, never have I seen one such as this
Its hair blends with the azure sky, adorned with pink peaches
On a black hat; but gazing at its face filled with bliss
Shocked was I to look on the face of an angelic being
But the face is that of a mortal child smiling at me
How unlike the beings well known to have faces blinding
Then loudly the being proclaimed, “A CHALLENGER APPEARS!”
From its stance, it jumped towards me playfully like a child
I thought to myself: this being is wet behind the ears*
With humility I denied: “I am not here to play
But if you may guide me, lead me to paradise’s shores”
Like a spoiled child denied, it puffed its cheeks looking away
“Who do you think I am? I am a proud child of heaven
From the family that causes the earth to quake in fear”
With those words, I trembled for I seemed to be a heathen
Then it raised its voice proudly declaring unlike a jade:
“For those who dare, fight me and become mist upon my blade!”
Btw, the last line is a paraphrased quote from Zhang Fei and I suck at rhymes and titles...

I think I did something last night...Sorry about the double post:
The Fantastic Legend: CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
Behold! Upon the roofs of Mayohiga
A creature leaps across the skyline
A pair tails and ears of feline descent
But humanoid in appearance
Beware of this creature for its pounce
Swift like a falcon diving for its prey
Tremble for it bites with teeth like sabres
Its claws sharp and crimson like blood
Its voice blends with the sound of the night
Its footsteps silent like a ninja as it creeps
Towards the unsuspecting…
“CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!”
Now observe the little creature
Playing with its master on this village, Mayohiga
I got tire of writing with rhyme and measure so free-verse FTW!
Btw, I don't mean to bother but how come this, this and this have not been linked in the first page?
I think I did something last night...I liked that. Kinda random, but I enjoyed the poetry anyway, although I will admit, it is far from perfect. (No offense, just saying.)
For some reason, I got the impression that you just broke out in song.
ON TOPIC: If Meiling guards the gate, does that mean she guards the gate all around? What about the back and sides? Sure, they might not have entrances, but someone could just fly past. (Maybe that is how people get in without getting their butts kicked by Meiling?)
EDIT: The first page hasn't been updated in a while. Pretty sure it hasn't been updated since before Kisume, but I could be wrong.
MORE EDIT: Oh wow. I didn't notice how harsh I sounded with the "far from perfect" thing. I ment that it was good, but could use a little improvement. I'm sorry.

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.WILD GUESS: She uses her chi powers to sense when someone approaches the mansion's wall. Given the aerial nature of Gensokyo's lifestyle, I imagine 'gatekeeper' is something of a misnomer.
The first page hasn't been updated since Satori.
Heart of StoneMy own wild guess is that Meiling was genuinely from China, and was ostracized for having natural red hair as a child. She learnt Martial Arts to protect herself from hate crimes, and ended up training to the point of superhuman ability, becoming a Youkai Martial Artist. She later became part of the SDM entourage after getting Befriended by Remilia.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Meiling tends to show up in fanworks with a dragon motif. My question is thus: are there any pictures of her with a tiger vs. dragon thing with Shou?
Heart of StoneA quick danbooru search found the concept sadly unexplored.
Their masters aren't impressed.
Nice jacket.
They don't quite get it.
Danbooru links may contain NSFW ads. I don't remember whether I have to say that in this thread or not.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThat second picture is awesome.
Sooooo...Meiling...ummm...yeah...
Perfect Memento says that she's ideal as a practice partner because of her balanced fighting style. Apparently these practice matches are quite the spectator sport for the residents of the mansion. By all accounts danmaku battles are enjoyable to watch from a safe distance, especially ones that are purely for fun.
EDIT: Meiling is often compared to Orange, probably because they look similar* , but I think the PC-98 character she most resembles is Elly. Both are gatekeepers for large mansions, both work for very powerful inhuman creatures, they're both Stage 3 bosses, and they're both associated with their stage theme more then their actual battle theme* .

Heart of StoneAlso, probably the most likely person to have the mentality of a martial artist. Gensokyo has a lot of strong opponents, but few of them would be up for friendly duels.
I think technically they are all up for friendly duels. Seeing as how that is the entire point of the spellcard duel system which they apparently all agree with.
on that subject, DS and St B totally should have been one game.
What? I'm curious as to what Hatate's comments about everyone from Wriggle and R Umia all the way through to Flandre, Yukari and Mokou would have been! (Suika not so much due to being in BOTH games)
