it was still a terrible idea since there was no reason to heal cell. Even worse since until the last minute Gohan wasn't even in on the plan.

Nobody said it wasn't a bad idea to give Cell a senzu.
I wonder how things would have played out if Goku hadn't given Cell the Senzu bean. It's possible Gohan would have won without activating SSJ 2. Goku probably also wouldn't have had to sacrifice himself so he'd be around prior to the Buu saga.

At that point...Goku, Vegeta or Trunks could have easily done it.
Chalk it up to that same bullshit that makes them not toss a Senzu to Goku when he's fighting Cell, or insist on fighting one on one in any and all circumstances.

Well they are Saiyans, the poster children of Honor Before Reason.
Yeah, laying the blame on Gohan is kinda hard considering he's... what, 12 then? 11? And bursting with power that's clearly affecting his mind.
But that said, are they really capable of killing Semi-Perfect Cell? They're strong enough to deliver a deathblow in theory, sure, but are they strong enough for them to pull it off when Gohan is clearly trying to drag it on? In that situation I cannot imagine that Gohan wouldn't just shut them down and continue on his merry way.

Except to what extent they are blood knights probably depends more on the plot than anything.
Goku has been very willing to end a fight quickly plenty of times. Toriyama just used the Saiyans drag out a fight to enjoy it excuse when he needs a reason for the fight to not end in five seconds.

Most of the time though that was because the fighter in question (Nappa, the Ginyus) wouldn't have given him a good fight so he saw no reason to let it go on, right?

Considering trunks knew the stakes one would think he would have stepped in at some point after cell puked up android 18 and Gohan wanted to make cell suffer. Sure Gohan could have stopped them, but they didn't even try. They just told Gohan to finish the fight when it was clear he wasn't listening.

Pretty sure it wasn't immediate since they had enough time to watch Gohan beat Cell to the point that Cell accused him of being a monster.
So instead of watching when it was clear, Gohan was no himself which is a key reason one probably shouldn't be putting the fate of the world in the hands of an eleven year who's hidden power was essentially his rage for the longest time.
Which even then they wouldn't have been in that mess at all if Vegeta hadn't let cell reach perfect form or Krillen hadn't destroyed the remote. There is a long chain of bad decisions made by the Z warriors in the Cell Saga. It all can't be blamed on one person.

If he chose to actually fight beforehand, he would've won...
It doesn't matter who's fault it was that led up to PC, Gohand continued the mistake chain by letting Cell trigger him.

Gohan never had a massive advantage over an opponent before cell only short bursts so there was never an opportunity to know if he would have done the same to any of his past opponents.

Gohan is 11 at the Cell games.
He's 4 at the start of Z.
One year training for the saiyans: 5 One year by the end of the Namek arc: 6
One year until Frieza comes to Earth: 7
Three years training for the androids: 10
One year in the time chamber: 11

I'm not sure where that extra year from the Namek saga came from...
But he's 16 by the Boo Saga, which is after a 7 year time skip...
So that one year in the time chamber is never really counted...it's physical.

The Namek arc is because they use the Namekian Dragon Balls twice after coming back and they take about 120 days to charge. Factor in the two months they spent traveling to Namek and the prep time for the trip and I think there's about a year from the time Vegeta runs away to the last wish.

2 months + About 6 days + 4 months = Not a year...
No prep time...it was barely over week anyway.
Karrot came back a year and a half later after Namek blew up...

Goku did honestly believe Gohan could beat Cell when he gave Cell the senzu. Presumably he realizes there's no way to beat the Androids here.
