Also he's not so much the AU counterpart to Grace as he is the AU counterpart to someone who doesn't exist because Grace does. General Shade Tail and Grace are mutually-exclusive entities rather than counterparts; Grace exists because Dr. Sciuridae's daughter died in a car accident and so the doctor took advantage of the experiment to create a Replacement Goldfish instead of what he was supposed to make, while Shade Tail exists because none of that ever happened and the experiment proceeded as it was meant to.

Neither truly has a counterpart in the other's dimension because the existence of one prohibits the existence of the other.

Wherever he goes, Elliot will never be free of his harshest critic: himself.

That's the problem with most risk free methods of power leveling. They'll level you, but they're not fun, and it's more like wasting time than saving it.

It really is pathetic. They were pretty clearly pushing for the HULK SMASH PUNY WEAKLINGS method for Skyrim. I tried several builds and heavy armor/two-handed with potions and bows was way easier than the rest and every bit as strong.

It's the Nords' homeland. Bellowing behemoths of pure manliness are the order of the day.

If they spend any more time justifying that this is TOTALLY NOT A MAKEOUT SESSION I PROMISE I WOULD NEVER TOUCH YOU OR MAKE ADVANCES TOWARDS YOU EVER to each other, I'm going to start calling Catholic Guilt on Shive again.

[up]Me neither.

I never really understood the term "catholic guilt", anyway. Are catholics supposedly guiltier than any other Christian denomination? That is not my experience with it.

No no, Catholic guilt is a real thing. As a Catholic with a Catholic girlfriend, I should know. But yeah, I think the notion that we're more repressed than other Christians is an American thing.

[up][up]But then it is just Christian guilt. That is what I am getting at. Why call it "Catholic guilt" if it is a trait common to all (or at last most) Christians?

[up]And don't every other Christian do the same thing?

Catholicism is big on the concept of Original Sin; that Adam and Eve's transgression in the Garden of Eden has caused all humanity to be sinful by virtue of existence. It's because of Original Sin that we get things like the Catholic mission to save souls: it is not enough to live a virtuous life because you were condemned from the moment of your existence, and only those who beg God's forgiveness for the terrible crime of existing can be accepted into Heaven.

It's also because of Original Sin that it is a Christian mission to oppose abortions, because a baby who dies unsaved will go to Hell. Hell is the default destination for all mankind.

In Catholicism, it's not enough to just pray in repentance, either; that's what Confessionals are for. Catholics are expected to make regular trips to confess every wicked deed or sinful thought or feeling they've had since their last Confession, so that they may purge their soul of the sin that living in the world has filled it with and remain eligible for Heaven.

This is where Catholic Guilt comes from: the idea that everything you've done is wicked and sinful, that you are damned for the crime of existing, that you must repent for basic human activity. Shive tends to freak out and break out justifications and overstatements for even gently brushing against the concept of sexual desire between characters, which is why I joke that it's Catholic Guilt.

[up][up]Because it is not the default for you. It draws more attention because it is not the standard. For me, it is the exact opposite. The majority of people I know are Catholics, but I can't remember any of them saying such things to me (except my grandma). I can, however, think of a few Evangelicals who said such things to me. But that is only because, for me "being Evangelical" is something to note. If a Catholic says it, I don't associate their excess piety with "being Catholic". Confirmation bias, basically.

Anyway, what I am saying is that it feels really weird and inappropriate to use the term "Catholic Guilt" when talking about some one who is not actually Catholic.

[up]Yeah, well, that is not at all my experience with Catholics and other Christians. Half of what you said can be applied to many Christian, anyway. Specially things like e "being big on Original Sin" and "fiercely begin against abortion".

Incidentally, Confession is not ubiquitous anymore, at last not where I live. Not everyone makes regular visits to their priest, if at all. In fact, the concept of "having a priest" is more associated to old people or Evangelicals over here.
