Eh. Stephen Fry didn't do it for me, but then no one who wasn't doing a spot-on Peter Jones impression would've really. Fry's voice is too plain.
I agree otherwise the casting was mostly good (though I had issues with Zaphod, Deep Thought and Lunkwill and Fook.)
And the opening song, despite being written by the directors, is probably one of the more Adams-like parts of the film. (Yes, I know, Adams wrote the flick. So what?)

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Does it count if I've read the scripts of some of the radio plays? I found a book at a library once that had the scripts. I can't find it on the library catalogue now, though.
I really should bug my dad to buy the tv series. And series 5 of Doctor Who. Really should've asked for Series 5 and not 6 last year. I wanna rewatch Victory of the Daleks.

I do wish that adaptations were allowed to stand on their own merits. I saw the movie before having read the book, which allowed me to enjoy both as their own similar, but purposefully different works.
The thing I liked most about the first two books was that they were the most random and had the most Guide asides. Basically, their structure was carried over from the radio series. As the books went on, they got more polished, more novel-structured, and ultimately lost the flavor I'd liked from the first few. As the plot focus got sharper, the crazy universe got smaller.
I think the reason I like Dirk Gently is because those books have the polish and structure, but they don't have the expectations I built up from the early Hitchhiker's books, so it works better.
Fresh-eyed movie blogBook 4 even kind of lampshades the evolution, suggesting if you don't like big fat padded stories you should skip to the end (which is the good bit and has Marvin in it).

I was promised a good bit with Marvin in it. I guess that's accurate, though I was more just wondering what the hell had been happening with Marvin altogether in that book.
Marvin's story there was incredibly confusing on the first read, and when I came back a few years later I still didn't really get it.
Fresh-eyed movie blogHelen Mirren as deep thought just din't do it for me. Deep thought has got to be godlike and commanding.
hashtagsarestupidI never saw the point of Hitchhikers. At all. Still don't.
Because it's funny?
Mind you, I've only read the books and seen the movie so I'm not exactly a massive fan. Red Dwarf was always more my thing.
Red Dwarf was funny, yes. I liked the characters, the situations they got themselves into and the dialogue between them.
On Hitchhikers, well I read a few of the books, listened to the radio shows and watched the telly version. The thing still left me colder than week old sick. I tried to force myself to like it as everyone else who liked sci-fi/fantasy stuff would just never shut up about it, but gave up on it eventually as life was a bit too short for that kind of thing.
The whole franchise just never was made for me.
If you could pick any Doctor to appear right where you are right now and take you away as a Companion, which one would it be?
"You are never taller then when standing up for yourself"Does Rowan Atkinson Doctor count?

Nope. I need a number One to Eleven. :P
"You are never taller then when standing up for yourself"He was an alternate number Nine, I think.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersPeter Davison. Hopefully I wouldn't end up like Adric.
Or Paul Mc Gann. Because he's handsome awesome.
Atkinson is 9. It counts.
Ninjaed.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Nine. I've only really seen the latest three. I definitely wouldn't want to go on terrible adventures featuring River Song so Eleven is out immediately.
Tealove is best pony.Pony Fanon IndexTwo. He seems like the most fun to be around and the least of a pain in the ass.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.9 because poor guy needed more adventures before getting offed.
"Teebs is a total grump, but he's usually right." - NLKEight has Nine beat on needing more adventures.
eight has how many radio plays and books though?
"Teebs is a total grump, but he's usually right." - NLKTrue. Eccleston probably wouldn't be interested in doing any Big Finish (that is if they ever get the rights to Nu Who.)
Dammit, I really need to get in to Big Finish.
Depends... I liked Eights movie, but if Eleven gets a good setting, he's great too. I wouldn't go with Ten ( I found he was horribly annoying at times, and Nine is out. I don't think he had a long enough of a run for me to decide if I liked him or not. So Eleven or Eight... eh, probably Eight.
I've seen some episodes of the tv show.
