* CompleteMonster (2010): Tom Chaney is an impulsive, homicidal thug who is far worse than the affable Lucky Ned Pepper. On the run from Texas Ranger [=LaBoeuf=] for [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals shooting a Senator's dog]] then killing the Senator himself for complaining, Chaney is hired by Mattie's beloved father for a job. Chaney blows all his earned money in gambling, then nearly shoots his opponents to death out of spite, only to instead kill Mattie's father on a whim for trying to calm him down. When Mattie tracks Chaney down to bring him to justice, Chaney is ordered by Ned to leave the young girl alone, but Chaney settles on [[WouldHurtAChild killing her]] simply for convenience. He toys with whether he will strangle the girl to death or toss her into a snake pit to "scream and rot", all while taunting her that he feels no remorse for killing her father, and when [=LaBoeuf=] tries to save Mattie, Chaney nearly murders them both.

YMMV can't be played with.

* HollywoodHomely: {{Averted}} in the 2010 version. Mattie's not ''ugly'' by any stretch but she does look plain and normal - a long way from the teenagers we're accustomed to seeing on Nickelodeon and Disney.

** The 2010 movie received only a PG-13 rating despite quite a lot of gore and violence, which viewers and critics at the time compared to Film/TheKingsSpeech getting an R rating solely for harsh language.

* ViewerGenderConfusion:
** Come on, if it weren't for the dress, one could hardly tell Mattie is a girl (in the 1969 film).
** It's been pointed out too. There's one picture on the internet comparing 1969 Mattie to Music/JustinBieber. Looking at the picture, they could've been twins.
*** Of course, this isn't the first time Music/JustinBieber's appearance has been compared to a girl's.

film. Her appearance in that movie has been compared to a girl's.young Music/JustinBieber.

** PG-13? Seriously? It's pretty damn gory in some scenes. What makes this even weirder is the Coens specifically said they wanted the movie to be a family film.
** The violence is quite realistic though in that it's harsh, yet understated and very brief.
*** Critics of the American ratings system compared this film's violence and PG-13 rating with ''Film/TheKingsSpeech'', released around the same time, which is rated R for literally nothing more than a therapeutic ClusterFBomb.
*** It even got a 15 certificate in the UK.

* MagnificentBastard (1969 original): [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure "Lucky" Ned Pepper]] is a feared {{outlaw}} hunted by Texas Ranger La Boeuf. Hiding out in Native American territory, Pepper detects and evades a trap by La Boeuf's gang to regroup with his full forces. Confronted by the young Mattie Ross, Pepper proves himself [[AffablyEvil surprisingly respectful]] as he orders his thuggish subordinate [[MoreDespicableMinion Tom Chaney]] to not harm the girl before gathering his forces to personally face down gunslinger Rooster Cogburn, even trying to gun Rooster down [[TakingYouWithMe while mortally wounded]].

* GeniusBonus: The conversation between Rooster and Lebeouf regarding the former's association with Quantrill's Raiders can come off as a moralistic overreaction (fully characteristic by this point) on LeBeouf's part to a former confederate soldier to those unfamiliar with the details of the American Civil War. Those familiar with [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_massacre Quantrill's methods and actions]] are more likely to see it as the sudden tipping point in sympathies between the two characters.

An Esoteric Happy Ending is an ending that's supposed to be happy, but fails at conveying this. This isn't the case here, since the sad tone of the film's ending is very much deliberate.

* EsotericHappyEnding: The 2010 version has Mattie lose one of her arms to a snakebite and she never sees Cogburn or Leboeuf again. In the epilogue, she gets the opportunity to meet Cogburn again, only to arrive a few days after he had died. She never actually learns what happened to Leboeuf. And on top of this, she ends the movie as a middle aged spinster as nobody wanted to marry a woman who was so interested in guns and business instead of more "proper" ladylike things. But on the bright side, they did bring Chaney and his gang to justice, which was their whole goal.

In fact, when Creator/TheCoenBrothers offered Creator/JeffBridges the role of Rooster Cogburn, he asked, "Didn't they already make that with Creator/JohnWayne?" To which they replied that it wasn't a remake, but rather an adaptation of the book, to which Bridges replied, "There's a book?"

** Read here as "holding your horse's reigns in your ''teeth'' so that you have both hands free for GunsAkimbo."
** Part of what makes Mattie so awesome, even more so in in the 2010 film. Young girl, on her own, who will not take "no" for an answer, crosses two states and travels the wilderness to find the man that killed her father and bring him in for justice.
** Rooster too, especially when he [[spoiler: runs his horse to death, and nearly himself as well, all to save Mattie]].
** [=LaBoeuf=] has his moment, too. [[spoiler: It can't be easy to stay on the trail with a bullet through your shoulder and a half-severed tongue. He eventually leaves when Rooster yells at the two of them after being way too damn drunk]].
** Even Ned Pepper is tough. Can't be a successful thief/murderer for long if you aren't.
