Misuse of Misaimed Marketing (now known as Misaimed Merchandising).

* MisaimedMarketing: When the novels were first brought over the US, as anime and LN's were still just becoming catching on in the 2000's, they decided to give the first 5 volumes more realistic looking covers using an actual photographed cosplayer as Holo, likely to seem more like a modern fantasy novel. The problem is it makes the novels look like a typical romance novel cover, especially with volumes 1's first cover featuring the model naked. What makes this choice even more bizarre, is that if any non-anime fan picked it up, thinking it was gonna be the usual fantasy/romance novel fair, they would be taken aback at the anime illustrations still present in the novel, making one wonder who it was aimed at.
* Narm: Holo's wolf form in the remake comes off as this, looking less like ferocious, vicious wolf and more like an adorable, big Shiba Inu.

** Yarei being in the remake wasn't surprising to fans given they expected it was gonna be more LN accurate. However, what ''did'' surprise many was the brief cameo of Chloe in EP 1., given that Chloe was Yarei's replacement in the OG anime. It's a nice tribute to the classic anime while still being more faithful to the Novels.

** One grievance some fans of the 2008 anime have is that Chloe has been replaced by a guy in the 2024 anime. This is despite the male in question, Yarei being the original version of the LN's character, and Chloe was an anime original character who took his place.
** Holo's design and demeanor coming off as a lot more silly and childish in the remake has put some viewers off, making some 2008 only-anime viewers think she's now 'ruined', having been turned into a generic moe girl compared to the more mature version of the OG anime. However, this version is closer to how she's portrayed in the novels and manga.

Broken Base

* BrokenBase: The 2024 anime is getting this for several reasons:
** The first is that it's a reboot rather than a straight continuation of the first two seasons. Long time fans are annoyed at a retread of events covered in the OG version whereas others feel it's needed both to bring in newcomers and to cover content cut in the previous version.
** The second reason is the artstyle getting the ''Literature/HighSchoolDXD'' treatment where it is closer to the novels than the OG anime. Some are interested in seeing a more faithful look whereas other fans feel that the designs are now more moefied and childish, especially for Holo. The reception has improved more with the release of further PV's showcasing that Holo still has her classic charm and shrewd persona. The anime has further mitigated these worries as the remake Holo still captures what fans have grown to love of her.
** The use of CGI and the bright, softer look compared to the OG anime's darker look and heavy use of lighting contrasts has put long time fans off, feeling it's too much like modern day isekai anime. Somewhat mitigated after the opening showed that the series will still make good use of lighting, however the CG is still a concern.
** The change from Yuji Yoshino to Kevin Penkin as the reboot's music composer, while well received, and very welcomed, some would wish that Yuji Yoshino returned.
** To some extent, there's preferences on which style of art fans prefer not only between the 2008 anime and the 2024 remake, but also between the 2008 anime, the LN's and the manga.
*** Like the 2024 anime, those who came into Spice and Wolf via the 2008 anime may also not be a fan of the softer, rounder, simpler look that the novels had, preferring the more sharp, darker and character designs of the 2008 anime.
*** Then there's the the view of the manga art by both fans of the novels and 2008 anime, Some may like the cuter, sexier art that the manga has, especially Holo, were as others dislike the manga for being too fanservicey and sexualized, feeling it misses the point of the series being a unique, grounded romance series that relies on the dialogue, interactions between Holo and Lawrence and Holo's charm, instead turning it into another trashy, fanservice filled romcom. It doesn't help that Keito Koumei, a hentai artist is the one doing the art. Having said that, fans can agree that the art is still top notch.
