* AcceptableTargets: It's pretty much frowned upon to wish death on a parent wherever you go. However, fans of the anime and manga believe Kousei wasn't wrong in saying that he wished his mother would die already due to how she forced her dreams onto her son; how she verbally, emotionally, and physically abused him (publically and privately) for every little thing he did wrong; and how she basically stole his childhood away and left him with deep emotional and psychological scars.
* BaseBreaker:
** Kaori. One group view that her bratty, selfish, and manipulative attitudes toward Kousei can't be tolerated, while another group view all her actions justify the purpose for Kousei own sake: to get him playing the piano again[[spoiler:, especially he's her idol all along and she don't have much time left to do it]].
** Tsubaki. Her character was initially well-liked as the tomboyish GirlNextDoor and childhood friend who was trying to get Kousei to play piano again. As the series progressed, some fans started to dislike her, seeing her as too selfish and whiny about her feelings for Kousei, her jealousy of Kaori and her wishing that Kousei would stop playing piano so he can spend time with her. The way she [[spoiler:discouraged Kousei's feelings for Kaori, outright told him that he didn't have a chance with Kaori and wished him to suffer for not reciprocating her feelings]] doesn't help.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: The whole soundtrack is exceptional, and includes some stunning performances:
** From [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ5WWWeBed4 Episode 2]], Kaori's performance of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, ''"Kreutzer"'', First Movement. She utterly ''owns'' it.
** The performance of Tchaikovsky's ''Sleeping Beauty'' waltz in Episode 18.
** In the final episode, a performance of Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G Minor by Kousei is joined by an imagined Kaori playing an invented violin accompaniment. The result is beautiful [[spoiler:and heartbreaking, as this is the last time they play together]].
* EarWorm:
** [[http://www.jpopsuki.tv/video/Goose-house---Hikaru-nara/a75eda14916fc6b45227b28c01f548f3 "Hikaru nara"]] by Goose house, the first opening theme. It doesn't help that it's played several times through the first episode. The second opening theme, [[http://www.jpopsuki.tv/video/Coalamode---Nanairo-Symphony/f96932e4221b1bd0b20f7086e8a0da45 "Nanairo Symphony"]] by Coalamode counts as well.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Whenever Kaori said that her chance to become bride/successful marriage are ruined due to Kousei (and in one moment, Watari) saw her private parts (accidentally, of course) were supposed to be comedic.[[note]]Episode 1, 5, and 12[[/note]] [[spoiler: It become sad when you realize that she indeed will never be anyone's bride because of her terminal illness that leads to her death.]]
* InformedAttribute: More of an 'informed crush' - we're told Kaori likes Watari in the first episode, but by episode 7, they still haven't shared so much as a one on one isolated on-screen conversation, and Kaori hasn't made so much as a longing glance his direction. Discussed in the finale: [[spoiler: the titular lie is that Kaori liked Watari instead of her actual crush, Kousei.]]
* NightmareFuel:
** [[spoiler:Kaori collapsing and unable to move her legs late at night in the hospital, seemingly unable to call for help]] at the end of Episode 15.
** Kousei trying to play the piano at the Eastern Japan Competition while in the middle of a huge [[HeroicBSOD BSOD]] and when he looks at his hands, all he can see [[spoiler: is the blood of the neighborhood black cat he tried to save at the end of Episode 20]].
