The people planning to join the motorway do sit down and do the math first (as evidenced by Cheen starting the journey while pregnant and saying they'll get to their destination when the baby is old enough to start school), so you'd expect that at prior points (before the episode) when the traffic delays are measured in weeks or months, the people planning their trips would realize that hiking across the surface of the planet is faster, and do that. Instead, they join the traffic jam, which makes it worse, to the point where traffic delays are measured in years!
