!!This work contains examples of:

* AmbiguouslyBrown: Lynette
* AntiHero: [[spoiler: Pulse]] used to be a straight example, but now is willing to come out of retirement and hurt a number of innocent people if it means preventing more misfortune in the future.
* CelebrityIsOverrated: Ned doesn't like being famous.
* ElementalPowers: One of Ned's recurring foes is a superhuman with water-based powers. Ned hesitates to call him a villain because, barring picking fights, he doesn't commit any actual crimes and seems to be in it for the attention.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler: Lynette lost her family when Pulse, in an attempt to protect people from the debris of a burning building, inadvertently destabilized the building and caused a lot more of it to collapse on escaping civilians.]]
* MissingMom: Ned's mother disappeared one day. His family thought her teleportation powers malfunctioned and assumed she'd wound up in some random part of the world, but after years of searching and no leads, she's been assumed dead.
* MuggleBestFriend: Early in the comic, Ned befriends Jude by pretending to know him in order to get away from a fan. Jude has no powers and the two hang out regularly.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler: Jude/Pulse was trying to rescue some people from a collapsing building, but when trying to blast some falling debris away from some escaping people, he destabilized the building even further and a bunch of innocents wound up dying. He went into retirement afterwards.]]
* ResignedToTheCall: Ned isn't too enthusiastic about being a hero. He was a big fan of a previous hero specifically because he knew that said hero would take the pressure off of him to follow in his mother's footsteps, but he wound up vanishing too. At the same time, Ned still puts on his mask and saves people when the police need help.
* WhatTheHellHero: Jude delivers a serious one to Ned when he sees that Ned isn't too careful when fighting crime.
