"[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response]]," shortened to "ASMR," is a relaxing response to a variety of sensations and noises, typically characterized by a tingling sensation on the scalp, neck, and/or upper spine, although it sometimes shows up as marked drowsiness. It is usually produced by what are referred to as trigger sounds, with some of the most popular being sounds of crinkling, tapping, scratching, sizzling, or even eating; whispering or speaking softly; and roleplaying scenarios that incorporate such triggers. The term was coined in 2010 by a woman named Jennifer Allen in the introduction to her Website/{{Facebook}} group, "ASMR Group."

ASMR videos have become a very popular, if rather niche, genre of content on Website/YouTube. Creators from across the world post videos covering a ''wide'' variety of topics while featuring tons of ASMR triggers, and many channels exist specifically to cater to ASMR fans. Some people have also discovered that media outside the ASMR community can give the same reaction; ''Series/TheJoyOfPainting'' is one well-known example due to Bob Ross' baritone voice and soft, soothing manner of speech. The genre does have its detractors. Many people accidentally come across the videos and mistake them for [[WidgetSeries weird internet videos]], while others are looking for recipes but come across people whispering too low to understand the recipe.

Often used interchangeably with ASMR is "mukbang." Mukbang is a form of video where someone films themselves eating food (usually in large quantities) while talking to their viewers, either in a live-stream format or FakeInteractivity format. The trend began in UsefulNotes/SouthKorea but spread to other parts of the internet as well. Mukbang is not the same as ASMR, but many people find they feel tingles while watching mukbang due to them involving similar triggers as ASMR videos. Mukbang videos have been criticised for encouraging unhealthy binge eating but they are still popular nevertheless.

ASMR videos are very popular on Website/YouTube. Many people from across the world post videos meant to induce tingles in others and many channels exist specifically to cater to ASMR fans. ASMR however falls under FunForSome. What sensations trigger someone vary from person to person; for example, some might find bubblewrap popping relaxing while it does nothing for others. "Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response", shortened to "ASMR", is a relaxing response to a variety of sensations and noises, characterized by a tingling sensation on the scalp, neck, and/or upper spine. It is usually produced by what are referred to as trigger sounds, with some of the most popular being sounds of crinkling, tapping, scratching, sizzling, or even eating; whispering; and roleplaying scenarios. This "tingling" can be triggered by . The term was coined in 2010 by a woman named Jennifer Allen in the introduction to her Website/{{Facebook}} group, "ASMR Group".

Some might not be affected by any type of ASMR, and others have found ASMR triggers to be repellent. Many people accidentally come across the videos and mistake them for obscure FetishFuel or [[WidgetSeries weird internet videos]], while others are looking for recipes but come across people whispering too low to understand the recipe.

Often used interchangeably with ASMR is "mukbang". Mukbang is a form of video where someone films themselves eating food (usually in large quantities) while talking to their viewers, either in a live-stream format or FakeInteractivity format.

!!Tropes associated with ASMR:

* AlienAbduction: This is a popular genre of ASMR videos, but is not as popular as other roleplays such as doctor visits.
* ActingForTwo: Some ASMR videos have the creator using a split screen to do multiple things at the same time, or to play multiple characters at once. ASMR [=KittyKlaw=], for instance, has done videos featuring her angel and devil characters together, and a Q&A featuring both of them and herself on screen at once.
* CoolBigSis: Some ASMR videos roleplay things such as "Big Sister Does Your Makeup".
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: ...and Russian, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Japanese, etc.
* FakeInteractivity: It is standard in the genre for the "performer" to ask questions to the viewer. Of course the "performer" never can hear any answers the viewer would give, but it gives the viewer the feeling they are communicating with the "performer".
* {{Fanservice}}: Some ASMR creators will make videos showing themselves in swimsuits, [[BareYourMidriff midriff-baring shirts]], and the like, usually as part of a scenario such as being on the beach or showing off a clothing haul.
* ForeignFanservice: Some ASMR creators emphasise their cultural backgrounds in their videos.
* NapInducingSpeak: ASMR videos can often lull the listener to sleep as much as produce the normal tingle response, and some creators, such as Jojo's ASMR, [[InvokedTrope intentionally style their output to this effect]] and/or mention it in video titles.
* {{Narrator}}: ASMR videos occasionally will feature a scripted off-screen narration while the creator is doing something else on-screen. The aforementioned clothing haul videos are one particular instance of this.
* NoBudget: Many creators just whisper over stock footage or do something as simple as [[MundaneMadeAwesome folding towels]] or giving lessons in a foreign language in their living room.
* NostalgiaFilter: Many of the videos involve childhood triggers such as "school nurse" roleplaying.
* OffTheShelfFX: Many ASMR performers are on a budget so they use household items, their personal property, and/or props that you could find at a "dollar store". Anything goes as long as it can provide the desired triggers.
* YouTasteDelicious: Licking the microphone or outright "ear eating" is a common trigger, along with the sounds of the mouth and kissing.
