The main character isn't predicting alternate futures, but time traveling.
We see him make decisions based on his "premonitions" within seconds. There's no way his mind could comprehend all those visions and make decisions on them in such a short time window. The only way his power could make sense is if he was really going through them and then rewinding time Prince of Persia style.
