After living in poverty for years, he hit it big when his play ''Theatre/ThatChampionshipSeason'' got proved a major hit on Broadway. Creator/WilliamFriedkin saw the play in previews and thought it "reeked of failed Catholicism,” and upon seeing a portrait of Miller in the *New York Times*, asked him to come in for a screen test.
