** Toriyama experienced this during the Android and Cell Saga due to ExecutiveMeddling. Originally, Dr. Gero and Android 19 were intended to be the Androids from Trunks' future and the BigBad of the arc, but his former editor did not like their designs. This led to the creations of Android 16, 17, and 18, but he was still not satisfied. This led to the creation of Cell. Then Toriyama's ''actual'' editor at the time liked the character but hated the design, so this led to the Semi-Perfect and eventually Perfect forms.

* GodNeverSaidThat: The age-old "Toriyama was originally planning to end ''DBZ'' during the _____ Saga." The only confirmed potential ending was the original first arc of ''Dragon Ball''.

* ThrowItIn: In the Latin American dub of ''DBZ'', after Goku forfeits his fight against Cell, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqegRtQB-jY the latter describes the rest of the Z Fighters being outclassed by calling them "insects"]], Vegeta's CatchPhrase in the dub. After that line, Creator/ReneGarcia, Vegeta's voice actor, makes a comment about the BorrowedCatchPhrase that was found funny enough that they added it to the episode as Vegeta thinking it:[[note]]In the Japanese version, Vegeta does not say or think anything.[[/note]]

* TheOtherDarrin: Original Japanese
** In the Japanese version, Mayumi Shou retired from voice acting, and so Creator/NaokoWatanabe (who was already working on the show as Puar) took over as Chi-Chi beginning with episode 88. Shou only reprised the part in the original ''Budokai'' game and hasn't voiced the character again since.
** Tenshinhan was filled in by Creator/KoichiYamadera in episodes 82 and 84 due to Creator/HirotakaSuzuoki being hospitalized with an unspecified illness at the time. Suzuoki would ultimately pass away from lung cancer in 2006, with Creator/MitsuakiMadono doing Tenshinhan in some video games up to ''Burst Limit''. Creator/HikaruMidorikawa has permanently taken over as the character in all media ever since ''Kai'', despite not sounding much like any of his predecessors. Notably, Tenshinhan was unincluded in ''[[ReunionShow Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!]]'' out of respect for Suzuoki's memory.[[note]]By proxy, this meant Chaozu was also not included[[/note]]
** Muten Roshi's Japanese voice had to be recast partway through the show after Kōhei Miyauchi, who had voiced the character since 1986, died just three months after recording episode 260, his final acting session. Since episode 288, Roshi has been voiced by Hiroshi Masuoka. This marks the only time a character was recast during ''DBZ''[='s=] Japanese run due to a voice actor's death. Creator/MasaharuSato has taken up the slack for most ''Dragon Ball''-related media due to Masuoka's age soon catching up with him. Masuoka would pass away himself in March 2020 due to rectal cancer.
** Karin-sama's original actor, Creator/IchiroNagai, didn't return for the Majin Boo arc and so Creator/NaokiTatsuta voiced him there.
** Toku Nishio, the voice of Mr. Popo, retired around the turn of the millennia and ultimately passed away in mid-2005. Dai Matsumoto replaced Nishio in the first ''Budōkai'' game plus the first ''Sparking!'', but ultimately Yasuhiko Kawazu would become Popo's new definitive voice for ''Kai'' and onwards. This also resulted in South Kaiō's recasting with Hiroshi Naka.
** Shen Long has been voiced by many actors over the course of ''Z''. Creator/KenjiUtsumi carried on from the previous anime up to his summoning by Mr. Popo towards the end of the Freeza arc and for most of the movies plus the video games up to Utsumi's passing in 2013. The dragon's appearance in the Cell arc would be performed by Creator/MasaharuSato as Utsumi would leave the series a little into the '90s. His sole voiced appearance in the Boo arc was done by Shin Aomori who'd also voice him in Movie 13. Creator/TesshoGenda would handle Shen Long's appearance in Movie 12.
*** Utsumi's departure from the show also meant that the Tenkaichi Budōkai announcer was recast for his showing in the Majin Boo arc. Hirotaka Suzuoki would take over after Tenshinhan had been [[DemotedToExtra largely removed]] from the series.
*** Going back to Suzuoki, he was replaced as the mushroom-headed announcer of the Anoyoichi Budōkai by Frieza's actor, Creator/RyuseiNakao in the twelfth ''Z'' movie and later by Ryohei Nakao (no relation to Ryusei) in ''Sparking! METEOR''.
** Bulma's mother changed from Mariko Mukai to Creator/HirokoEmori in the early Cell arc due to schedule conflicts and the latter was getting expensive in general. Yoko Kawanami would then take over the character from episode 240 onwards and continues to voice her to this day.
** All of [[Creator/JunpeiTakiguchi Junpei Takiguchi's]] roles were recast over time, likely due to his work schedules. The Grand Elder was given to Creator/MasaharuSato for the character's short-lived resurrection, though bizarrely Takiguchi still (except in episode 101 where Sato substituted) voiced Porunga for the last stretch of the Freeza arc. Porunga would be permanently taken over by Creator/DaisukeGori until his passing in 2010. Baba was inherited by Kuririn's actress Creator/MayumiTanaka by the time of the Cell arc.[[note]]Takiguchi had long left the show by that point[[/note]]
** Elder Kaioshin's original voice, Reizo Nomoto, retired from voice work by the turn of the millennium and later passed away in 2006. The late Isamu Tanonaka would fill in for ''Budōkai 3'' with Ryoichi Tanaka continuing on through recent media.
** Not counting his [[TimeShiftedActor age change]], younger Dende was voiced in ''Sparking! METEOR'' by Bulma's actress Creator/HiromiTsuru since the original actress, Tomiko Suzuki, died three years prior in 2003. This also meant that Marron had to be recast in ''Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!'' with Pu'erh and Chi-Chi's actress Naoko Watanabe.
** Grandpa Gohan's original voice Osamu Saka was becoming less readily available over time, so Kinpei Azusa substituted in the Bardock special, and later in episode 288, Creator/JojiYanami would voice him in a flashback of Goku's.
** Jheese's original voice, Kazumi Tanaka, died from cor pulmonale in 2005, so Yasunori Masutani filled in briefly for a GBA game before Creator/DaisukeKishio became Jheese from 2010 onwards.
** With the death of Creator/KojiTotani, Kewi was recast with Naoki Imamura in the ''Sparking!'' video games before Creator/EijiTakemoto became the permanent new voice in later media.
** Creator/ShigeruChiba replaced Creator/AkiraKamiya as Garlic Jr. for the character's return in his self-titled filler arc. Funny enough, Chiba was the voice of Garlic's minion Nikki during his debut film. Ginger's original voice, Creator/KojiTotani, passed away in 2006, so Yasunori Masutani has become his new voice.
** With Daisuke Gori and Tetsuo Mizutori's passings, Mitsuaki Hoshino and Creator/YasuhiroTakato have become Vinegar and Zald's new voices respectively.
** King Cold's dialogue in the Anoyoichi Budōkai arc was done by Creator/MasaharuSato in place of Creator/DaisukeGori, who played him in the Cell arc.
** Dr. Gero's long-time voice, Koji Yada, died from kidney disease in May of 2014, so Ikuya Sawaki has taken over in all media from 2015 onwards. Dr. Kochin from movie 2, also voiced by Yada, was recast with the late Tetsuo Goto in ''Dragon Ball Heroes''. Goto also inherited Hoi from movie 13 due to Juuji Matsuda's mostly retiring from acting.
** Tao Pai Pai's voice was done in ''Z'' by Butta's actor Creator/YukimasaKishino due to his original actor, Creator/ChikaoOhtsuka, being apparently unavailable. With Ohtsuka's passing in 2015, Kishino has become his permanent replacement in recent video games.
** Bibidi was voiced originally by Isamu Tanonaka in Kibitoshin's flashback during episode 277 of ''Z''. With Tanonaka's death in 2010, Creator/TakumiYamazaki picked up the slack in ''Dragon Ball Heroes'' and Naoki Tatsuta voiced Bibidi in ''Kai''.
** Pui Pui's main actor Tomohisa Aso was unavailable for the ''Sparking!'' video games, so Shinobu Satouchi filled in for him there (plus his cameo in ''GT'').
** The ogres Gozu and Mezu's voices have varied throughout all their appearances. Their debut had them voiced by Masaharu Sato and Koji Totani respectively, but their appearance in the Freeza arc was done by Ryoichi Tanaka and Hirotaka Suzuoki. Later still in the Anoyoichi Budokai filler, Gozu changed to Creator/HisaoEgawa while Sato was now Mezu's voice, and finally, their cameo in the Majin Boo arc was done by Creator/RyoHorikawa and Daisuke Gori respectively.
** As Toma and Panbukin's voices from the Bardock special, Creator/KazuyukiSogabe and Creator/TakeshiWatabe, had passed away over the years, they've been replaced in recent projects by Creator/TetsuInada and Creator/YasunoriMasutani respectively. Inada also replaced Sogabe as the Southern Kaiōshin when ''Kai'' came around with Moriya Endo replacing him as Android #13 in the video games.
** Raspberry's original voice, Ken Yamaguchi, died of acute heart failure in 2011, so Takuya Kirimoto became his new voice in ''Xenoverse''.
** Afterlife martial artist Olive is voiced in the Anoyoichi Budōkai arc by Creator/HisaoEgawa, but his two cameos at the end of the Boo arc are done by Masaharu Sato and Yasuhiko Kawazu respectively.
** As explained, doing all those fight scenes ''really strains the throat''. Goku's Super Saiyan 3 transformation had ''non-stop screaming for the better part of an episode''. And a few seiyuu did die by the time ''Kai'' aired, most notably Creator/DaisukeGori.
* TheOtherDarrin: English Dubs
** Happened with the entire voice cast when [=FUNimation=] started making episodes for Toonami in 1999. Due to Cartoon Network giving [=FUNimation=] less money to produce the dub than Saban did, they couldn't afford to rehire the original Vancouver-based Ocean cast, so they had to assemble their own in-house cast in Ft. Worth, TX. This cast would dub the remainder of the series, and many of its actors, such as Sean Schemmel, Chris Sabat, and Sonny Strait, continue to dub the series to this day. The Vancouver cast was brought back for the Westwood dub of episodes 123-291, which aired in Europe and eventually in Canada. It essentially meant that the Ocean cast replaced the [=FUNimation=] cast in these areas at different points, but due to a hectic airing schedule, some regions would seemingly switch between the [=FUNi=] dub and the Westwood dub at random, which meant that this trope was repeatedly invoked.
** Vancouver cast:
*** This cast had previous been used for the short-lived BLT dub of the original ''Dragon Ball'', and there were some changes when ''Z'' began production. Don Brown replaced Doug Parker as Shenron despite Parker still doing minor roles in ''Z'' like Bubbles and Meiz. Creator/ScottMcNeil also filled in as Turtle for his first few appearances (plus ''The World's Strongest'') before Parker returned in episode 7. Creator/CathyWeseluck, in addition to her already voicing Chiaotzu, replaced Kathy Morse as Puar. The biggest would be Doc Harris replacing Jim Conrad in the role of the narrator, the former having completely eclipsed the latter in the role within the Canadian cast. Technically, we also have Terry Klassen replacing Michael Donovan as Grandpa Gohan.[[note]]The BLT dub added some narration in the first ''DB'' episode from Gohan assuring Goku that he'll always be there even in death[[/note]]
*** Goku was initially voiced by Creator/IanJamesCorlett for most of the original Saban dub. After he quit Ocean due to a pay dispute, he was replaced with Peter Kelamis for the remainder of the Saban dub and the three Pioneer movies. [=FUNimation=] then used their own in-house cast for the Toonami episodes, which featured Creator/SeanSchemmel in the role. Schemmel continued to voice Goku for the remainder of the series and every subsequent iteration in America since. Over in the regions that got the Westwood dub, however, Schemmel was replaced by a returning Peter Kelamis starting with the Trunks Saga. Finally, about midway through the Cell Saga, Kelamis left the cast to focus on his stand-up career, and Creator/KirbyMorrow played Goku for the rest of the Westwood dub. The only other character to top Goku in the number of actor changes during the original airing was Master Roshi, who went through four actors during the American run. Ian himself was the other darrin to Creator/MichaelDonovan, who voiced Roshi in BLT's dub of ''Curse of the Blood Rubies'' and ''Dragon Ball'' episode 3.
*** Kami was first voiced by Dale Wilson for his shuttling Goku to the afterlife up to the arrival of the Saiyans, but Ward Perry took over for his retrieval of Goku and passing away plus his appearance in Mr. Popo's flashback when divulging his backstory at the start of the Namek Saga, not to mention, his appearance in ''Dead Zone''. [[TheOriginalDarrin Wilson would later reclaim the role]] for the character's final appearance in Westwood's dub of the Cell Saga. For Guru's peaking into Krillin's mind, the younger Kami was voiced by Creator/ScottMcNeil.
*** Guru himself was voiced by Robert O. Smith in his debut but by Creator/DavidKaye for his powering up Gohan and warning the heroes of the Ginyu Force.
*** The Vancouver dubs of the first three movies by Pioneer had some recasts as well. Piccolo's actor Creator/ScottMcNeil, as mentioned earlier, replaced Doug Parker as Turtle's voice in ''The World's Strongest'' and also replaced Alec Willows as Oolong in the uncut dub of ''The Tree of Might''. Donald Brown played Master Roshi in the movies instead of Peter Kelamis who took the reigns from Ian Corlett in the series. While Laara Sadiq reprised Chi-Chi in the latter movie, Creator/LisaAnnBeley replaced her in the former as well as in the first movie ''Dead Zone''.
*** While the Westwood dub for episodes 123-291 mostly brought back Funimation and Saban's original cast with Ocean Studios, several recasts did occur. As mentioned above, Peter Kelamis only returned as Goku until episode 174, when he was replaced with Kirby Morrow. Creator/SaffronHenderson also originally returned as Gohan but was replaced with Creator/JillianMichaels beginning with episode 166 due to her marriage and move to the US. Older Gohan was voiced by Creator/BrianDobson in Future Trunks' flashback in the Cell arc but when Gohan grew up in the present timeline, starting with the Great Saiyaman Saga, Creator/BradSwaile became his voice with Brian later becoming the main voice of Majin Buu. Maggie Blue O'Hara replaced Lalainia Lindbjerg as Bulma (after previously voicing the role for Funimation's pilot dub of ''Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies'')[[note]]This was due to Lalainia putting her career on hiatus for mental health reasons[[/note]], but she herself was replaced with France Perras beginning with episode 269 following her move to Hong Kong. Jane Perry reprised Panchy (Bulma's mother) for the Cell arc before Creator/WillowJohnson took over for her appearances in the Buu arc. Also, Terry Klassen took over as Master Roshi, replacing Ian Corlett, Peter Kelamis, and Don Brown in addition to replacing Doug Parker ''and'' Scott [=McNeil=] as Turtle; Creator/RichardNewman replaced Alec Willows as Oolong, Creator/BrianDrummond replaced Elan Ross Gibson as Baba, Dale Wilson replaced Ward Perry as King Yemma, Creator/TedCole and Creator/ScottMcNeil replaced Creator/PaulDobson as Korin and Dr. Brief respectively in addition to replacing Doug Parker as Mez, Creator/CathyWeseluck replaced Saffron Henderson as Scratch, Creator/LeeTockar replaced Don Brown as Elder Moori, and Alistair Abell replaced Creator/JasonGrayStanford as Raditz (in flashbacks). Plus, Scott filled in for Don Brown as King Kai during episode 231 only. Laara Sadiq mostly reprised Chi-Chi, but Lisa Ann Beley filled in numerous times when she wasn't available. Finally, Willow Johnson filled in for Farrell Spence as Android 18 a handful of times (with the difference going almost completely unnoticed for years).
** Funimation cast:
*** During the run of ''Z'', many voices wouldn't remain consistent. Tien Shinhan, Gregory, and Mr. Popo were voiced by Chris Cason in the Frieza Saga before being replaced in future arcs by Creator/JohnBurgmeier in the former two roles and by Creator/ChristopherSabat in the latter role. Kami, before Sabat took over, was originally voiced for his revival by Chris Forbis who normally voiced Dodoria and Dr. Brief. Dende and young Goku were also voiced by Ceyli Juliann Delgadillo until she left for New York and was replaced in both parts by Creator/LauraBailey and Creator/StephanieNadolny respectively. In Goku's case, however, Delgadillo's sporadic availability caused them to cast Stephanie in some brief flashbacks before they went with the latter for dubbing the original ''Dragon Ball''. They already dubbed the second movie ''Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle'' with Delgadillo and used her again for their dub of ''Mystical Adventure''. Her last line in ''Z'' was shared ''with'' Stephanie [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xv-O4TCYCM in a flashback of Chi-Chi's during the early Majin Buu arc.]]
*** Older Gohan was first voiced by Creator/DameonClarke in ''The History of Trunks'' plus a flashback during Trunks' fight with Perfect Cell, but Creator/KyleHebert would become the voice of Gohan in the Buu arc and later Future Gohan's cameo in ''Dragon Ball Super'' and in some video games.
*** Creator/KyleHebert replaced Dale D. Kelly as the narrator after the Cell arc. Kelly was let go after Funimation executives refused to pay him royalties for the soundtracks he developed for the Bardock and Trunks specials. His role as Captain Ginyu was also recast with Brice Armstrong from ''Dragon Ball Z Budokai'' onward.
*** Stand-up comedian Mark Britten voiced several characters from the Ginyu to the Otherworld Tournament Sagas. His roles included Burter, Malaka, Oolong, Ox-King, Moori, Korin, Grand Kai, and the Mushroom Announcer. His roles have all been replaced to some extent over the years. Weirdly enough, Brad Jackson was originally Oolong in the dub of ''Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle'' before Britten voiced him for his cameos in the Frieza Saga. Jackson reclaimed the part in the Garlic Jr. Saga and continued with Oolong for the remainder of the series.
*** As for the rest of Britten's parts, Chris Sabat took over Burter, Korin, Ox-King (in the original dub of the Buu Saga), Moori, and the Mushroom Announcer for ''Fusion Reborn''; Creator/BrandonPotter voiced the mushroom announcer in ''Budokai Tenkaichi 3''; Creator/KyleHebert became Ox-King's new definitive voice (after Sabat); Chris Cason got Malaka; Finally, Grand Kai got a different voice with Evan Jones in ''Fusion Reborn''. Unlike Dale Kelly, some of Britten's work got inexplicitly left on the remastered sets despite the inconsistencies it caused.
*** Guldo was originally voiced by Dylan Thompson for the filler on King Kai's planet before Bill Townsley replaced him in ''Budokai'' onwards and in the redubbed Ultimate Uncut edition.
*** Burter is an interesting case. Mark Britten voiced him originally as well as in the first ''Budokai'', but then Creator/VicMignogna became the voice in the Ultimate Uncut edition. Vic was meant to redub Britten's material in the remastered release too but proved unavailable so Christopher Sabat took over in addition to redubbing Burter's Namek Saga material.[[note]]Britten's voice for whatever reason was retained in episode 92[[/note]] Vic reprised Burter in ''Kai'' and in video games beginning with ''Tenkaichi Tag Team'', but apparently Toei executives didn't care for the recast, in addition to some other characters, so Sabat had to take Burter and those other characters back.
*** More than a few of the English voice actors did not return for ''Kai'', most notably kid Gohan, Bulma, and Frieza's have different actors. Also, none of the Ginyu Force's voice actors, except Recoome, returned. Some did return for ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods'' like Android 18, Oolong, and pre-recorded lines for kid Goku and Gohan's actress from ''Dragon Ball'' and ''Dragon Ball Z'' were used.
** The France-based Big Green dub recast many of its characters in-between movies:
*** When Vegeta/Vegetuh first appears in the Return of Cooler dub, he's voiced by Doug Rand (the actor that would most famously voice Broly in the dub.) In every other movie after that, he's voiced by Ed Marcus (the actor most commonly referred to by the fandom as "Old Bastard.")
*** The same thing happened to Cooler. In ''Cooler's Revenge'', he's voiced by Doug Rand, but in ''The Return of Cooler'', he's voiced by Ed Marcus.
*** In the Bardock special, a flashforward to Goku and Vegeta's battle on Earth infamously has Vegeta being voiced by [[CrossDressingVoices Sharon Mann]], "Kulirin"'s voice actress. This is because she voices Kid Vegeta in that dub, and for some reason, AB Groupe chose to have her play Adult Vegeta as well.
*** Piccolo/Big Green is normally voiced by Paul Bandley (the other "Old Bastard"), but for ''Dead Zone'', he's voiced by David Gasman.
*** In ''Tree of Might'', Tenshinhan is infamously given a very alien-like voice by Doug Rand. When Tien reappears in ''Bojack Unbound'', he's given a more normal-sounding, albeit very Shakespearian voice by David Gasman. Even weirder is that Sharon Mann voices him on two occasions: when he gets punched by Turles in ''Tree of Might'' and when he gets killed in ''The History of Trunks''.
*** Bardock was given not one but two voice actors: David Gasman provided his voice in ''Bardock: The Father of Goku'', while Doug Rand voices Bardock in the intro scene in ''Cooler's Revenge''.
*** Future Android 17 is voiced by Matthew Géczy in the Trunks special but his present timeline counterpart's one grunt is provided by Sharon Mann in the dub of ''Super Android 13!''. In that same movie, Géczy took over as Trunks in place of Doug Rand who voiced most of his appearances.
*** Chiaotzu is voiced by Jodi Forrest in ''The Tree of Might'' but by Barbara Anne Weber Scaff in ''Bojack Unbound''. Some of his grunts in the former movie were provided by Ed Marcus for some reason.
* TheOtherDarrin: Other dubs
** In the Latin American Spanish dub, nearly every voice actor was replaced in ''Kai'', but the original VA's were brought back for ''Kai: The Final Chapters'', the ''[[Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods Battle of Gods]]'' and ''[[Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF Resurrection 'F']]'' movies, and ''Super''.
** The German dub replaced Santiago Ziesmer with Oliver Siebeck as Vegeta. The fans preferred Siebeck.
