A script was commissioned, and Keaton and Ryder both signed on, but Burton lost interest in the project. For decades rumours would occasionally circulate that the project was moving forward only to die down with no progress. In March 2023, Warner Brothers announced that a sequel was finally going into production with Tim Burton directing and Keaton, Ryder and O'Hara returning to their roles from the original movie.
