* AllThereInTheManual: Out of the context of the original short story, the leg lamp can seem like a rather random and surreal prize. But in the original story on which the subplot is based, the trivia contest is run by the Nehi Soda Company, whose logo was [[https://mayberrybooks.com/famous-soda-pops-i-have-known-vol-iv-orange-nehi a lady's leg]], a pun on "knee-high" stockings.

* HideYourPregnancy: Tedde Moore was eight months pregnant at the time of filming. Miss Shields could not be shown as an unmarried mother in the 1940s, so the filmmakers padded the rest of her to match her belly, making her just appear stout.

(No word on why they didn't simply rename the character ''Mrs.'' Shields.)

* ActingForTwo: In the 2017 live version, Creator/MatthewBroderick, who played the narrator, also did small bit parts, such as the mail man who delivers the leg lamp and a doctor who looks over Flick during the flagpole scene.

* {{Blooper}}: At one point during the 2017 live broadcast performance on FOX, Creator/MatthewBroderick flubbed one of his narration dialogue, and said "rein beer" instead of "reindeer".

* FilmedStageProduction: Creator/{{Fox}} aired a live production of the Broadway musical adaptation in 2017. Three songs, including a short Music/BebeRexha music video that played before the musical proper, were added to the television version.

Not trivia. Also not a stew. Just one anachronism.

* AnachronismStew: A costume example. The movie is set in the 1940's, but the design of the Mickey Mouse mascot costume seen in the Christmas parade was first debuted in 1971.

* BudgetBustingElement: A large portion of the $3.3 million budget was spent on an ultimately DeletedScene. The scene features Ralphie having an ImagineSpot taking place in the ''ComicStrip/FlashGordon'' universe where he uses the Red Ryder BB gun to save Gordon from Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. Despite the resources used to create the scene, including the large soundstage and set for the planet, the scene was forced to be cut by the studio to keep the runtime close to 90 minutes.

** Creator/JackNicholson was apparently a fan of the short-stories, and really wanted to play Ralphie's Old Man (he was even willing to take a paycut if necessary![[note]]For perspective, this is the same guy whose salary consumed the bulk of the budget for ''Film/Batman1989''.[[/note]]) However, Jean Shepherd feared that the presence of such a high-profile actor in a supporting role would distract people from the main story.

* WrittenByCastMember: Creator/JeanShepherd, writer of the original stories and co-writer of the script, appeared in a voice-over role as the adult Ralphie.
** He also appears onscreen as the bearded man waiting for Santa at Higbee's who tells Ralphie the line starts "back there".

** Recently, [[Creator/{{Epix}} [=ScreenPix=] Action]] has done a nice little meta-joke about this by running a 24-hour marathon of Creator/BobClark's ''other'' Christmas movie, ''Film/BlackChristmas1974'', on Christmas Eve.

** Vancouver, Canada fills in for Northern Indiana in the sequel.
** Hungary and the Republic of Bulgaria will fill in for 1970s Northern Indiana for the upcomimg Creator/HBOMax sequel.

* ChannelHop: The original film was distributed by Creator/{{MGM}}. The films subsequent sequels (''A Christmas Story 2'' and the upcoming Creator/HBOMax sequel ''A Christmas Story Christmas'') are distributed by Creator/WarnerBros due to the rights of the original film being acquired by Turner Entertainment Co. after Creator/TedTurner purchased MGM's pre-May 1986 film library in the late 1980s, which were later acquired by Time Warner (Warner Bros. parent company) in the late 1990s.

* TheOtherDarrin:
** Similar to the first sequel, ''Film/ItRunsInTheFamily'', ''A Christmas Story 2'' had the film entirely recast due to the original cast having grown too old to reprise their roles, since the film is set six years after the original film.
** Creator/JulieHagerty will replace Creator/MelindaDillon in the role of Mrs. Parker in the upcoming Creator/HBOMax sequel.

* RoleReprise: Creator/PeterBillingsley, Ian Petrella, Scott Schwartz, R. D. Robb, and Zack Ward will reprise their roles as Ralphie Parker, Randy Parker, Flick, Schwartz, and Scut Farkus in the upcoming Creator/HBOMax sequel.
