Tear Jerker / Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Moments pages are Spoilers Off. Proceed at your own risk.

  • The beginning: Henry wants so badly for his father to come home, but according to Will, there's no chance of that happening. When Henry mentions Poseidon's Trident, Will only turns it down as just a legend. This is the man who never gave up trying to reunite with Elizabeth in the first 3 movies, and he's lost hope he'll ever be free to see her again. His parting words ("You have to let me go.") seal the deal, because they sound so convincingly like they would become a Meaningful Echo of how Henry can't save his father from the curse of the Flying Dutchman. ...Thankfully, that's not the case.
  • Young Jack. While is is also a Moment of Awesome seeing how he once was a confident, calm, and overall GOOD captain and then seeing him now is just sad. One sees how Jack's drinking and greed have turned him from a cunning sailor who can easily outwit a captain 30 years his senior to a bumbling fool that no one respects.
    • Fridge Tearjerker for why he acts this way in the beginning: it's reminiscent of a child star trying to relive their glory days by living in the past.
  • Jack's situation at the start of the movie. He's little more than a joke, plagued by bad luck and a string of failures to the point that even the reward for his capture is paltry. His crew exasperated by his latest disaster abandon him in disgust, even the ever-loyal Gibbs. The scene where he's left alone, staring wistfully at the bottled Black Pearl against the ocean, highlights how he's truly lost his freedom
  • Barbossa revealing that he gave up his daughter so she could have a better life. He is both surprised and proud of the intelligent woman she had grown into, though this only makes him even more self-loathing.
    • His overall ashamed expression at himself. Here, Carina thinks her long-lost father is some great scientist who left the journal as a dying wish. As if his past cruelties aren't bad enough, there's generally the fact he's just a pirate when compared to Carina's expectations. When Jack threatens to tell Carina the truth, Barbossa threatens to cut out his tongue in order to save Carina the shock and shame of learning that a "worthless blaggard" like him could be her father.
    • When captured by Salazar earlier in the film, Barbossa is able to use the compass to follow Jack's ship. It's only when he's joining the group in their quest that he realises the compass was pointing to Carina the whole time. Even when he'd all but forgotten, Hector's greatest desire was to see his child again.
  • Barbossa's somewhat sad look after Salazar is finished sharing his backstory. He knows too well what Salazar is going through, cursed and unable to feel the world around him, filled with "pain and rage" at his misfortune. The reason he seems sad? Because unlike him, there seems to be no way for Salazar to escape his misery. At least Barbossa and his crew caught a lucky break when they discovered a way to reverse their curse. But from where Salazar stands, there's no hope of ending his curse.
  • The death of Hector Barbossa. And Jack's reaction as well.
Jack: Pirate's life, Hector. Pirate's life.
  • Jack giving up the compass. It had just shown him what he truly wants: The sea. But he has no ship, no crew, and is seen as a joke by everyone (to the point that his ransom is a single coin). Giving up the compass is Jack giving up any hope of getting what he wants and accepting that this is truly the end for him.
